NewFish, excellent result.

Hammer0id, dark spots on the disc is usually a fault of the media and not the drives firmware. I suggest you have another try. Perhaps you will get a result like NewFish's above. If you don't want Lightscribe, I'd also suggest flashing to 9P57 EOHT II (use the EEPROM Utilty to convert).

can anyone tell me why i burned @ 4x when the selected speed was 2.4x? (ImgBurn)

What media are you using?

Maybe the drive doesn't support the disc at 2.4x? Imgburn can't really force the drive to burn at 2.4x if the support for it isn't there.

Disable SmartBurn, and see if it will burn at 2.4x. SB may be what's giving you issues.

think so? i've always had SB enabled and never had a problem.

i was thinking more along the lines of it being an OS or EOS issue, although i was under the impression that OS/EOS only adds speed options, and will still burn at the speed you select.

at $2 a disc and MIS becoming increasingly hard to find (had to wait two weeks and import from canada) i want to narrow down the problem as much as possible before burning another disc.

SB does often play a role in deciding if the disc is burned at the speed you want. It just might be the cause.

interesting..... this firmware doesn't support 2.4x burning for mkm003 (why i have no idea!)

before:
LITE-ON DVDRW LH-20A1H LL0C (E:) (ATA)
DVD+R DL (Disc ID: MKM-003-00) (Speeds: 2.4x, 4x, 6x, 8x)

now:
ATAPI DVD A DH20A4H QP53 (E:) (ATA)
DVD+R DL (Disc ID: MKM-003-00) (Speeds: 4x, 6x, 8x)

Possibly because it's a mite touch slow for burning 8x DL media, and would only be useful if you had a very bad batch of media. Otherwise, I've seen people that have gotten better results at the higher speeds than the lower speeds [me one of those people! ]. Don't fret about the lost speeds. Just try 4x, 6x, and 8x burning, and you may find that your burning quality has gotten better.

BTW: I thought you meant that your drive was able to burn at 2.4x with this firmware before. You didn't mention that you were on a different FW.
