IIRC, OPTODISC R16 has been locked to 6x in early firmwares for both the A1 and A4 series. For the 20A1P, they added 16x in the last firmware, KL0N. LiteOn may do the same for the A4, as soon as they can test it a bit.

I don't think turning on OverSpeed allowed for 16x, either, even with CK's patches. It was seemingly specifically locked to 6x. You might try testing a few strategy swaps, but I have few/no suggestions for what you should try.

I think Optodisc media requires a lot of fine-tuning to burn right at 16x, so LiteOn chose the "safeness" of 6x. That's just speculation though.

What Albert said

I've burnt a disc @6x and result was awesome except for some PIFs from dust

Yeah, I realized that after I posted, using media code speed. Instead of messing with the writing stratagies I'll just use my trusty Pioneer 111D to burn these. Thanks for all the help and quick replies.

At last a more than 18X burn with Panasonic TYG03 (Although it seems a little slower rpm for 20X !)

I shan't be picky, because this is better than some of the burns A3P users are getting these days on this same media [in some aspects]. Glad to see jitter stayed under 10%.

My drive doesn't hate this A-firmware for 16x, it seems.

Hello.. Well due to the A3 being out of stock at Newegg I decided to upgrade my 20A1H to a DH20A4H drive. Now my question is how do I determine which patch to use the 53A or the 57S? What is the difference?

Long story short: try both. Whichever gives you the better quality burns, use that. I'd suggest QP53A first, then QP57S. [See the first post of this thread]. It doesn't explain the difference between S and A firmware, but I suggest you search this thread for it.

If you search but can't find much on what is different about the A and S firmware, I'd start with this post in the general A4P thread: http://club.cdfreaks.com/f44/lite-dh...ml#post1988484 [post 450, in case that doesn't work for you]. It is a lot of reading, but you'll understand better.

Jitter as low as MCC 0xRG20 with this drive. Must be about the time CMC really started working with MCC on quality media.

Futher to Alberts post.

molitar, what firmware does your drive currently have? You can use the flash utility to check which version (A/S) your drive currently has installed.

I wish LiteOn would release a new update for the 20A4H, like they did with the 20A4P.

Ok it appears I need to use the QP57 version since when I ran the EEProm utility to back it up that is the firmware it indicated is installed. So it appears you can determine by use the EEprom utility. BTW Codeking I sent you a message with a link to a copy of the eeprom backup of my DH-20A4H drive.

CodeKing, currently have 'DVD A DH20A4H QP57 2007/11/20 19:35'

BTW why does the eeprom backup show A their but "S" firmware in the flash utility? Is this a bug with the eeprom utility?

Thanks molitar. Both A and S show "DVD A..." as the drive ID. The firmware type A/S has to be derived from the boot code of the firmware, not the EEPROM.

Well since it's a brand new drive totally untested.. no burns as of yet.. I will make sure to post a couple of successful burns with the drive with default firmware.. after I know it is working properly I will install the patch firmware and post results.. that way you will see the before and after results from a drive that has not burned anything as of yet

I will make sure to reset the learned media after updating the firmware.. that way it will be the first 2 burns with the stock firmware and than the patched firmware.

Not bad at all. Not too far off from 9P59S: http://club.cdfreaks.com/2012297-post603.html. I do think this is a good step in the right direction for PIF. Everything else is about the same, and I'm thinking that, with a little time, the PIF would have been even closer between the two burns after a bit of learning with '59S.

***WARNING: Not the shortest post!***

a single UNDERspeeding test
Test subject: Verbatim 16x DVD-R @ 2x
Code:
MID: MCC 03RG20
Country of Origin: Taiwan, by CMC Magnetics [MAP6...]

Drive used: LiteOn LH-20A1P crossflashed to LiteOn DH-20A4P
Firmware: 9PV1 Test Firmware, version A, enhanced with FBL and EOHT 6 by C0deKing
Settings of: [OHT=enabled]; [HT=enabled]; [SmartBurn=enabled]; [OverSpeed=disabled]

Software used: ImgBurn 2.4
Mode: Image Build Mode, direct to device
A few settings: [Perform OPC before burn = enabled]; [Buffer = 256 MB]; [Chosen write speed: 2x]

Disc's intended purpose: data backup

Comments:
  • Burn: The drive issued an Optimum Power Calibration error at the beginning of the burn. This is often the case with underspeeding. With this app, I was able to retry. Other programs may not be so receptive, and may create a coaster.
  • Disc Quality: About equivalent to what one could expect when using media meant for archival [ex: MAM-E or MAM-A archival media using TDK's media codes]. However, the disc performs much better at high speeds, with 1,500 less PIF, and much better PIE and jitter.
  • Surface Scan [ScanDisc]: Both drives reported that all files are okay. Not much here.
  • TA Jitter: Lands and Pits don't appear to be formed correctly, as is reflected in the high jitter in the DQ. No real change between zones.
  • TRT: I decided to use just the Pioneer for TRT, as the LiteOn is fairly robust, and pretty much does a good job with any complex discs. Seems there is an issue not picked up in the surface scan. Other discs TRT fine.
