Hello. Tommorrow I am going to buy this DVD burner. As it is my first Sata drive, I want to ask few questions...

- About instalation, did Windows automaticaly recognize sata DVDRW drives, or I need to install driver (motherboard has nForce 430 chipset). I don't have floppy drive in my computer, and my HDD is PATA.

- Next, can I boot from this drive (in case I need to reinstall Windows, or try some of live Linux distribution)?

- Can I use smartburn utilities with this drive? Is it reccomended to crossflash to LH-20A1S firmware, and is it a hard job.

Thanx!!!

Tommorow I will have it also but the 20A1S-15C version.
I already have the Asus 1814 BLT.
I didn't install any driver except the intel .inf but I am not sure about nforce chipset(never liked them). I used my Asus to install winXP just fine.

I activated nvidia Sata in bios, and that was enough to get this drive to work. With this drive I can use Smart-burn feature, and I can use it for disc quality scanning. Only thing is that drive don't scan jitter. I will see how it performs, and eventualy i will flash it.

Thanx!!!

What do you mean cross flashed?
Wasn't a Lit-On?

Well, it already was a Lite-On. But the DH firmwares report a generic "ATAPI DVD..." name, as opposed to the "LITE-ON DVDRW LH-20A**" names in the other firmware [9L0*, for this series]

Mine is a 20A1S-15C and it came with 9L07 firmware.
I just flashed the firmware from the firmware page.

Yes, it was an ATAPI DVD A DH20A1S, with UX11 firmware. I used Flashfix utility + CodeGuys 9L08 firmware. Everything goes fine.

Actually, you can't flash to a drive with a different ID using some of the later CodeGuy's firmware EXEs. The alternate method would have been to use the Flash Utility to flash the Codeguy's EXE.

You are correct . LH-series firmwares aren't flashfixed any more but require the Flash Utility instead for crossflashing.

Isn't it LH-20A1S or DH-20A3S? It's not important, it's just that I'm confused about the models now.

LH-20A1S and DH-20A3S definitely exist. But, does a DH-20A1S exist? And does an LH-20A3S exist?

The first 3 models you name all exist, LH-20A3S doesn't exist. But there's also a DH-20A4S . Too many to choose, I bailed out long ago .

By the way, I saw you considered selling your 755A , probably because you want to go all SATA... is that a smart move? You could at least put it in an enclosure (it works best up to 12X anyway) .

I see, thanks for your reply. Then I can only guess the following:

The terminology change from LH to DH prior to the release of an integrated buffer memory model (MT1859L>20A3S) logically results in the existence of an earlier LH-20A1S model, followed by the DH-20A3S and a renamed LH-20A1S, the DH-20A1S.

The interesting questions then are: Is there really no other differrence between the LH-20A1S and the DH-20A1S than the renaming?
And does the DH-20A1S really have an MT1899E chip?

Of course, If the DH-20A1S has an MT1859L instead of an MT1899L, or if an LH-20A3S exists as well, my whole theory would be wrong.

My PX-755A: Yeah, you're right. The reason is the sad fact that there's no original Plextor drives anymore and IDE devices more and more have become legacy devices. I tried to "build" a PX-755SA by buying a HQ/brand/no no-name IDE>SATA converter with a MARVELL 88SA8040 bridge-chip (the PX-755SA has that one) on board. But there's no such product. Only SATA>IDE with that chip. And even those SATA>IDE ones are no-name converters.

OK, now I'm sure, that these drives do exist and others do not (SATA, no LS only): LH-20A1S, DH-20A1S, DH-20A3S.
