Hello guys! This is my first post! I'm Stefano from Italy!
I've really appreciated this firmware mod! So, my thanks goes to Codeking and all the other users who tested this incredible firmware!
However I've seen the scans of the Princo 4x@16x so I want to share my results with those people who likes the quality over the speed.
These are the scans of two Princo burned @4x(their standard speed):
The image on the left shows a Princo burned with Enhanced Online Hypertuning disabled, in the image on the right, viceversa, the EOHT is enabled and we can clearly see a little improvement.
I consider Princo a very crappy media, so it's good to know that it can be burned without problem!
Anyway I've used a LiteOn DH-20A1L(maybe it's the non-retail version?) crossflashed to a LH-20A1L BL06.

TDK 16x DVD-R
CMC MAG AM3
Written at 18x
Known settings: OS=enabled; all else=unknown
[known] KL0P [assumed] FBL EOS EOHT 6

An old scan I hadn't posted from April. Not half bad for CMC MAG AM3 when over sped.

Hello again,
Since I crossflashed the drive, I am having trouble opening the tray.
I need to press several times before it opens.
Same problem when clicking on Eject (right click on My Computer)

Could it be related to the upgrade. I neve had trouble before.

Thanks again

Get better DL media. The drive probably cannot focus on the sub-par media. Go Verbatim made in Singapore DL, and, if your drive still can't detect DL media, get a replacement drive.

EDIT: My reply still stands.

Thanks for your super-speedy answear .
I burned without trouble dvds dl in the past, verbatim and fortis, so i don't think my burner has something broken.
There's no way to force the burner to use a dvd also if don't recognise it?

P.S. I remember for everybody the problem: bough AONE dvd dual layer, my lh-20a1s says: "no dvd" .

Not that I know of. If this is indeed due to focus problems, or a bad job on spreading the dye, or other physical defects, then there is a pretty good chance that, even if a different drive could write to the media, any burns would be unreadable afterward.

Very first burn with brand new Lite-On 20A1S.
Flashed it right away with the 20A1S.9L09.patched-eos-eoht by C0deKing.
Bye bye warranty

Same disc scanned with BenQ DW2000, Lite-On 20A1S, and Pioneer DVR-212.
Pioneer couldnt read at 4x? 8x was the lowest.

Dont mind the disc label

Not half bad for RITEK F16 at 20x [something I can't get my drives to do].

Hi, I am new to this DVD Burner Firmware modding scene. While I have modded many others devices like my router, microwave, motorola phones, etc. I had never known it was even possible to mod a DVD Burner until today hehe. I have been reading things on this website for the past 8 hours straight and learnt quite a few things. I even flashed my older 165P6S with a patched firmware on the thread for that class of device. Now I am here to seek knowledge about my newer drive which is an LH-20A1S.

I went ahead and backed up the EEPROM as suggested in the first post then I flashed the 9L09 version with FBL and EOHT patched. I rebooted then loaded up the EEPROM Utility v4.0.0 but on the options tab only Smart Burn is enabled. I thought EOHT patched meant it would enable OHT as well. Can somebody clarify this for me please? Do I need to turn on OHT manually even after flashing with a pre-patched EOHT firmware?

Since I am new to this, I don't want to risk damaging my drive. I never had problems with this drive except that it makes weird sounds at times but it still burns good. Being a strict NON believer of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", I want to mod it anyway. Oh yea one more thing, FBL says it is "slightly" lower RPM than FB, are there numeric values to go with that statement? Thanks.

The options are turned off after a flash. Just enable them once and they will remain enabled, even after a power off reset. Enabling OHT enables EOHT.

FB starts at he 16x CAV RPM (6.7x) whereas FBL start at an RPM between the normal 12x CAV and the 16x CAV (6.2x).

Thanks for the reply, I guess I will stick with the FBL and EOHT patched version. For the sake of long term stability I doubt I need the extra boost of FB and I usually burn DVDs at 4X or lower since I could multitask on the PC and don't mind the wait so I won't use the EOS patched firmware either. I know multitasking might seem trivial now but I could still remember the days of my P3 and even P4 when burning a CD or DVD meant do nothing else on the PC or risk getting a coaster, lol.

So let me see if I have this thing down right. I read on another page about what the different Lite-On options mean but OHT was still a bit confusing. First of all this is what I understand by what you wrote; The firmware with the EOHT patch adjusts the OHT algorithm on the firmware so to speak but it does not actually enable OHT thus once I enable OHT feature via EEPROM tool it will be using the EOHT procedure. Is my thinking accurate?

Now to the part that I am confused about. According to what I read HT only activates for unknown media, Forcing HT enables it for all media; where does OHT come into play? Is OHT in effect for all media or only unknown media, also does it work in tandem with HT or independently.

Lastly I know you probably get this alot but it's only because you deserve it: Great work and keep it up! You have a great skill!

Darkseid001, thanks for your kind words.

Your understanding of OHT and EOHT is correct.

HT decides upon a write strategy to use for the entire burn, whereas OHT adjusts the HT strategy throughout the burn (the small dips you will see in the write graphs from Nero CD/DVD Speed).

You can burn at maximum speed and multi-task. Absolutely no need to burn at a slower speed for that.

Just wrote a disc to see that my drive could still write. It's still chugging along. [Darn, no reason to get one of those nifty, new, and slightly troublesome iHAP322 drives, then. ]

I have a LH-20A1L and have tried the FB and FBL and enabled all the options and can not get it to burn my Verbatim DVD+R DL any fast than 4X. I know it flashed fine because it updated my firmware to the newer version.

Anyone have any ideas why I'm not able to go any faster than 4X? Imgburn says the discs are rated up to 4X and I select 8X and it says in the log burning at 8X but it never goes any faster than 4X. I've tried 8X and 12X with the same results...

The drive will only burn as fast as it can, which is 4x. What you see is not just the rating; it is the maximum write speed descriptor for the disc inserted in the drive, and tells you the fastest you can hope the drive will write to the disc. The list of write speeds is static, and will not be able to force the drive to go any faster than it can.

edit - Not to mention you're completely ignoring the fact that he's asking why overspeed isn't working, when overspeed is specifically intended for writing on a disc at a speed higher than it's rated for.

Right, sorry, I overlooked the OverSpeed part. OverSpeed only works with Single Layer media, and doesn't work with DL media for this drive series.

So whatever write speed support is in the firmware for the given DL disc model is [unfortunately] all that the drive will support for that disc model; OverSpeed will not enable anything faster.

Selecting anything not listed as being a supported write speed will have the drive select the closest speed [the next lowest speed], which--when paired with the above information--means that the drive will write at 4x when anything above 4x is selected.

_Shorty-dammit, I don't see anything demeaning about Albert's above post and I know from reading many of his posts that he would never intentionally do that. Please leave the moderating to the moderators.

Okay, thanks that was the answer I was looking for. Well I had hope for a way to make it burn faster, but at least I understand why it won't.

Is there another firmware that will allow over speed on DL for this drive?

Is there a drive that can be made to over speed DL discs?

I guess next time I could just buy 8X media...
