There is no firmware difference. A 18A1P@20A1H reads a YUDEN000 T02@16x, and so does a 18A1P with the fb-eos and also with the original firmware. Tested without even ejecting the disk between the flashes, still reading @16x.
Edit: Booktype of testdisk is DVD+R

Thanks ala42. I just checked the firmware and there is no obvious slowdown for media branded less than 16x, like in earlier models.

I did however search the 18A1P thread (which has very few read scans) and I eventually found one read scan from bichi of an 8x disc that read at 12x.

So I'm confused as to why some are reading at 12x and some at 16x.

bichi's disc was bitset to DVD-ROM as well.
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showpost.php?p=1632859

Can someone confirm whether an 8x branded disc, not bitset to DVD-ROM, reads at 16x in the 18A1P. Thanks.

recommend we crossflash our dw1800 to Lite-On LH-20A1 ? i think read speed should runs full 16x speed.

RICOHJPN R02 (Maxell 8X) burned with LH-18A1P (GL0C) and no bitsetting:
(Same strange dip which I don't get with 16X media and is not due to the disc. Drive connected via USB.)

@Sen, looking at your scans i think you got a bad drive, it should be RMAed back. Take it back and get another one of the same, hopefully it will be a good one.

Here's ritek f16 burned at 20x using the fb-eos firmware. I think this is a great results for this media, especially at this speed.

Most media won't burn at 20x. As I mentioned earlier in the thread, I almost took out the ability to overspeed to 20x because only very good media will be able to do it. The long delays indicates that the drive cannot get a lock back on the media, be it due to tracking or focus. The other thing is that at these RPMs the disc can start to distort making it very hard to focus on the disc during a full revolution.

So what I'm saying here is, don't expect every disc that offers the 20x burn speed to burn at this speed, because most won't, but I left it in because it's fun to try anyway.

Edit: One other thing. I've also found that clearing OPC improved my 18x and 20x burning but it deteriorated after a few burns. Just in case it doesn't work the same for you, make sure you backup your EEPROM before trying it, so you can go back.

Yes, i also suspected it's one of the not so good batches. But unfortunately the writer is bought from another country, so RMA is kinda troublesome. Thank you for your valuable comment, SonnyUnlocker.

C0deKing, thank you for the valuable insight. I will try a few more unrated 20x burn, it's fun.

BTW i cleared my OPC without even backing up just before these unrated 20x burn. I'm still a noob with Lite-On drive.

I'm confused! To get MCC004 to burn at 20x you would have to enable overspeed, which enables smart-write. Your burn has no OPC relinks. Is this a strategy swap or am I missing something?
