It doesn't seem to need it. All +R and -R reads at 16x and ROM-DL reads at 12x. I tried ROM-DL at 14x and 16x but it was not reliable.

Nice burns there NewFish! I'd be hard pressed to choose between 12X and 18X speeds with those results. Guess if I was in a real rush (or a CdFreak!) I'd take the latter and save 56 seconds!
Thanks again to COdeKing for the FAST 12X option!

Liteon 18A1P read 8x +R in 12x speed only, but dw1800 can run full speed. something wrong?

I understand the drive will drop back to 12x reading if required (possibly vibration or errors) but I have confirmed reports from 18A1P owners that all +R media (any branded speed) will read at 16x and my 20A1H definitely reads all +R and -R media at 16x. Perhaps other 18A1P owners can confirm this for me as well; that media branded less than 16x reads at 16x.

Thanks MegaDETH. That's odd. Here's my 20A1H read scan of the same media:
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showpost.php?p=1673009

And IIRC, pinto2 confirmed in the 18A1P scans thread that 8x branded media read at 16x.

I just found the post here in the 20A1P thread:
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread....&page=13&pp=25

So it looks like this could be a difference in the 18A1P/H firmware. I'll have to do some checking...
