Liteon 167T DVD-ROM + New 9S1B Firmware --> Awful sound on Startup?

LiteOn / PLDS / Sony Writer Discuss, Liteon 167T DVD-ROM + New 9S1B Firmware --> Awful sound on Startup? at CD and DVD Writers forum; I just flashed my 167T DVD-ROM with the recent 9S1B frmware. Now the drive makes a strange "seeking" sound whenever I turn on my PC or when it awakes from hibernate / standby. It is quite similar to the "seeking" sound the floppy drive makes when turning on the PC.

Just wondering if anyone else can confirm this (then I would consider it to be "normal" even though it sounds awful )

The drive seems to be functioning fine, just wondering about the sound ...

Cheers!

Hi, Klaasklever!
I've got Litey 167T, did flash it to a new firmware version, but there was no sound like the one you mentioned. Later I flashed it back to a speed-patched 9S19 firmware. Maybe you should try to flash it back to an earlier version and see if the strange sound is still there?!

No, with earlier Firmwares the sound isn't there. Only with the most recent 9S1B one.

I'm not quite sure what you mean...

The 9S1B (the new one) was the OFFICIAL one (i.e. not modified at all)
The older 9S19 one (which I used before and which I reflashed shortly)
was "speed hacked". (codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html).
But with the non-hacked, official, older "9S19" the sound also isn't there.
As it is not with the speedhacked one.

To make it clear again: This distinctive (somewhat disturbing "floppy seek") sound is only present when the new, official 9S1B firmware from the LiteON site is used.

I would be grateful if u could try ur rebadged drives with the new fw.

Do you have hask to the CODEGUYS to patch the firmware (9s1B) for speed ?

If yes, what was their answer ?

No, sorry, I have not asked them yet.
As the sound annoys me I think I will stay
with the old firmware for the moment.

I've tried the firmware 9S1B and all is fine :-)

No awfull sound when I read or when I wait or even when I boot ( with media or no media in the drive) .

So your drive could begin to have some wear.

BTW: I even put the drive RPC1 ;-)

Hope that it help.

Best regards

That's weird. Maybe the rebadged Sony version is somewhat different after all.

I'v tried the new Firmware on TWO 167Ts now, and BOTH exhibit the same sound.
(Again, the sound only occurs when you reset or power on the PC).
With the older 9S19 Firmware, the sound goes away....

Thank you for trying it on your drive anyway

Do you have try on a different computer or different type of Mobo/PSU the 167T ?

Cause I know for sure that the sony is exactly the same thing exept the sticker on the drive.

Cause if it happen only when you power up it can be also an issue with your PSU ?

Hope that it help

Klaas,
Have you had any more problems with your 167T other than that awful sound at boot? I just upgraded the same drive in my machine last night and it is now making the same sound as you described. You're not the only one with this problem.
