Re: LiteOn 165P6S Test Firmware Results

Quite strange I observed that Verbatim MCC004 media burnt in Liteon w fw MV7U are read by the Litey at 16x unlike any other media... does anyone have any explanation for this behaviour? Subsequently I ask if there is a possiblity to make this drive read by default any disc at 16x (speedhack) like the old dvd-rom from liteon?

Re: LiteOn 165P6S Test Firmware Results

Can you please rephrase your question ? I'm not sure i'm following you about reading @ 16 x since all *my* scans are read at 8x and i'm not seeing any other *read* scans at 16x. Most of my scans are *burns* at 16x but not reads.

Thanks !!

This confirms it. For this media, 8X is the speed. This is the third scan I have seen. It is better than any MCC 02RG20 ever was. Too bad they sell it as 16X, but I suppose it does burn, even if not very well.

You might try rescanning at 4X. I have found my drive is not consistent with older Liteon scans when done at 8X and since I want as much comparibility as possible, I stick to 4X.

I find that for both MCC 02RG20 and MCC 004 far better results are achieved at 8x than anything higher.

Panasonic branded printable TYG02 burned with DVDDecrypter @ 8x. Everything on.

I'm getting great results with this firmware sticking to 8x with TYG02, MCC 004 (MIT) and MCC 03RG20 (MIT).

That scan on your TYG02 is very good for Liteon, better than mine.

BTW, you can turn off the DVD title in the CDSpeed options.

Thanks but I like to store my scans with the volume label so I can refer back to them. I just blank them out when I post here.

I was telling that normally Liteon 165P6S reads dvd+r at 5-12x CAV. But some discs like MCC004 are read (ie copied to hdd, if you wish) at 7-16x CAV. This is what I observed and I am puzzled why only some discs are read at 16x max speed; Benq 1640 and newer drives reads at 16x all DVD+/-R media.

Re: LiteOn 165P6S Test Firmware Results

Most of my scans are as per everybody else's, so I'll include three scans from some mediocre 8x rated Gigastorage Corp GSC003 DVD-R.

1. SB=ON, HT=OFF, OS=OFF, Burn Speed=8X
2. SB=ON, HT=ON, OS=OFF, Burn Speed=8X
3. SB=ON, HT=ON, OS=ON, Burn Speed=12X

Now, it's possible that I just got a dud disc (or two), but why would PIE be lower in burn 3 than burn 2? The PIF spike at 1.25GB on burn 3 is common for these discs. Burn 1 was very good until ~3.5GB.

Re: LiteOn 165P6S Test Firmware Results

Here's another disc that nothing can burn, from a bulk reel that someone at work got. Vanguard VDSPMSAB001 DVD+R 4x rated.

SB=ON, HT=ON, OS=ON, Burn Speed=8x

Re: LiteOn 165P6S Test Firmware Results

Possibly the 12x write strategy uses a more powerful laser output ot something like that ?

Re: LiteOn 165P6S Test Firmware Results

Yeah, it's possible. 12x is OS on these GSC003s.

Some FW MV7U observations.
1. Loud seek actuation (clicking) on int13 (IDE init).
2. KProbe 2.5.2 doesn't always set HT/OS correctly. SmartBurn 3.1.16 does.
3. KProbe (a number of versions) will no longer scan CDs.
4. CD-DVD Speed weightings not ideal for point estimate result. (Not really FW related).

I found that only disc can be write at 16x(normal mode, not HT) can be read at 16x for dvd+-R, and I feel that's not reasonable. I'll see if I can have this algorithm changed or not.

Yes Wind, that's not reasonable.
Burning speed is burning speed, reading speed is another question.
I can understand a slow down of reading speed in the case of a poor disc but not with excellent discs like Taiyo Yuden, MCC, etc...
Nec, BenQ and others read all discs at 16x.
This problem (it's not a very problem but it's pretty strange) is present in all drives of the 5S/6S series.
(Little OT: No news about the QA quality problem with the test firmware of the 1635S? )
Thanks!
