Wind,

I made some confusion because DVDinfo is informing an CLV 12.0X available descriptor for Sony08D1. Then I've supposed that it could be burnt at 16X with OS.

Thanks

chas0039,

I agree with you. It's better to slow down than risk to produce coasters.

Thanks

I am in deep trouble. After flashing, my drive refuse to read any media, pressed or recordable. Does anyone know how to fix this? If not can someone point me to a link to get the original firmware?

Thanks,

Even with or without a disk inside, the drive led keep flashing as though it is trying to read something.

Anyone know how to fix this?

khoang82,

Try to flash back to your original firmware. The firmware is available at http://www.liteonit.com/ODD/English/...e_dvd%20rw.asp

K
khoang82,

It is Liteon official site. It seems that it is down all this weekend. You will have to wait.

Do you have the 165P6S or did you flash the wrong drive?

I doubt that flashing back to MS0M won't work with the original LiteOn flash utility, you will need to extract the firmware and flash in DOS.

Well, I bought one of these drives- mainly because of the good things I've been seeing here and to give back some information on this test fw.

My SAP had some problems reading discs burned with my previous drive (SOHW-1213S@1653S CS0T). Even those that showed very good quality scans were not recognized properly (no problems on other players). The player had problems showing the main menu, but was usually OK after ca. 1/4 of the disc. No problems with RW or DL discs This issue is gone with this new burner.

The scans @8x with the 165P6S seem to be comparable to what my 1213S@1653S (CS0T) shows. It helps that the time required is cut in half.

I've tried to do pairs of discs with the same media type: with and without HT/OS. Because I immediately upgraded to the test firmware (made backups of the firmware with xsf), I don't have information on the stock firmware.

In most cases, I used an older version of CD Speed to burn a Nero image file- so I have the writing trace on the CD-Speed tests and won't bother posting the "create disc" graph then.

Being a frugal person, I started with rewritables (just noticed though that HyperTuning does not yet support these ).

First try with 8x DVD+RW.

Ricoh 8x DVD+RW,
MID: RICOHJPN W21 (001).
Firmware: MV7U
Disc Type: CD-Speed data disc
Burned with: CD-Speed 4.50
Burn speed 8x
Time: 8:37 / 8:00 / 8:07 / 8:01

Case 0: Nero CD-Speed create disc
Case 1: HT/OS off (disc 1 virgin disc)
Case 2: HT/OS on (disc 1 generation 2, quick erase)
Case 3: HT/OS on (disc 2 virgin disc)
Case 4: HT/OS off (disc 2 generation 4, quick erase)

The first case is a virgin disc, HT off, OS off. The second case is the same disc, generation 2 with HT/OS on. Quality is OK in both cases but significantly better with HT/OS off.

To check if there was a "first time" effect, I wanted to do a second disc with the order reversed, but didn't realize I had to toggle the tray for the change to HT/OS to take effect. I don't really know what the status of the second burn was, so I'll skip it and show a later burn with this disc (4th generation) with HT/OS off. Again, HT/OS on is not as good as with HT/OS off.

Second medium is again a rewriteables, this time Sony 4x DVD+RW, not full. The film, incidentally is "Attack of the Giant Moussaka", one of the worst films I've ever seen on TV or off.

Sony 4x DVD+RW,
MID: SONY S11
Firmware: MV7U
Disc Type: Video
Burned with: Nero 6.6.0.16
Burn speed 4x
Time: 12:10 (not full)
Case 1: HT/OS on, full erase
Case 2: HT/OS off, quick erase
Case 3: CD-Speed TRT

This disc has been used about 20 times, and wasn't full on this test.
First diagram: HT/OS on, second HT/OS off. The third diagram is a CD-Speed transfer test. Interestingly, CD-Speed thinks this disc has a capacity of 31.62 GiB.

Here also, it HT/OS off seems preferable.

Now the inevitable MCC 004.

Verbatim 16x DVD+R printable, MIT (CMC)
MID: MCC004
Firmware: MV7U
Disc Type: Video
Burned with: CD-Speed 4.0.4.0
Burn Speed 16x
Time: 5:39 (not full)
Case 1: HT/OS on
Case 2: HT/OS off

The scans are prior to printing on the discs (PIF's are ca. 20% higher after printing). The PI spike is characteristic for this lot- every disc I've burned shows it. It actually contains ca. 1/3 of the total PI count. The error counts are slightly lower with HT off, but the PIF's occur at different locations. With HT/OS on, ca. 50% are in the later cluster (ca. 3 GiB), with HT/OS off, almost 80% are prior to the PI-peak (ca, 1GiB).

Maxell 16x DVD-R, MIJ
MID: MXL RG04
Firmware: MV7U
Disc Type: Video
Burned with: CD-Speed 4.0.4.0
Burn Speed 16x
Time: 6:10, 6:01
Case 1: HT/OS off
Case 2: HT/OS on
Case 3: Create disc (disc 1)
Case 4: transfer rate (disc 1)

About 60% of the PIF's are in the innocuous looking cluster at the halfway mark in disc 1 (HT off). But here again, HT/OS off seems to do better- the PIF count increases significantly with HT on.

The drive reads dash-media @16x.

I didn't have good luck with CMC media on my old drive, but had some lying aroud for tests.

Philips 8x DVD+R
MID: CMC MAG E01
Firmware: MV7U
Disc Type: Video
Burned with: CD-Speed 4.0.4.0
Burn Speed 8x, 12x, 12x
Time: 8:09 / 6:16 / 6:47
Case 1: 8x HT/OS off
Case 2: 12x HT/OS on
Case 3: 12x HT/OS on

The 165P6S does very well with this media. There may be a learning effect too- the second OS burn (both 12x) is better than the first (although the source was fragmented and there was other activity on the system during the burn).
However the serial numbers vary quite a bit (I picked up a 5-pack of these), so lot-variation may be a factor here.

+ media (and DVD+RW) are only read @12x.

Platimum 8x DVD+R
MID: RICOHJPN R02 (003)
Firmware: MV7U
Disc Type: Video
Burned with: Nero 6.6.0.16 / CD-Speed 4.0.4.0
Burn Speed 8x, 12x
Time: 7:09 (not full) / 6:17
Case 1: 8x HT/OS off
Case 2: 12x HT/OS on

Super quality- as good @12x with HT/OS on as @8x without.
In the 12x burn (HT on), half the PIFs are < 1 GiB (before the recalibration point)

I'll post all of the 6S stock firmwares on my site today, that will allow people to flash back to stock firmware, should they need to. I would imagine this will be quite an issue when the official HT/OS firmware is released.

@khoang82
If you still have an issue with your led flashing then send me a copy of your EEPROM file, backed up using the latest EEPROM Utility (on my site).

Here's MS0M in a windows flasher that will allow you to flash over MV7U:
http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares/d...MS0M.stock.rar

I would also strongly recommend that everyone makes a backup of there EEPROM file. You never know when you are going to need it.

I flashed my drive with MS0M.stock.rar with no luck. Maybe this drive is toast.

I sent you the epprom CODEGUY. Though I cannot find the link to release my email.
