your drive likely have oem firmware.. you must obtain the firmware from the laptop manufacturer

Most laptop manufacturers won't bother to post firmwares for OEM drives, so you are more or less forced to use the official LiteOn firmware (it'll work just fine; it's just that since drives sold via computer builders are supported by the computer builders and not by LiteOn, so LiteOn's JK0N flasher's refusal to flash your drive is just a way of keeping the responsibility in the hands of Packard Bell--it's a common practice with all manufacturers).

Anyway, this is how you can make it work...

Step 1: Make a backup copy of your current firmware. You can do so using LtnFW. There are two reasons why you should make this backup. First, if for any reason, you decide that you want to undo the firmware flash, you will need a backed up firmware. Second, I would like to add the firmware to my personal collection.

Please zip it up and e-mail it to me. Thanks...

Step 2: FlashFix the official JK0N flasher. The firmware flasher is checking your drive and seeing that you have an OEM model and is thus refusing to flash it. FlashFix will patch the firmware flasher so that it will agree to flash your drive.

Step 3: After using FlashFix, run the flasher, make sure that you select the correct drive from the drop-down list, and flash.

I have an emachines M6810 laptop with this Slimtype Combo LSC-24082K drive. The computer was purchased from a coworker, so the hard drive was wiped. Because of this, the CD-R burner did not function properly. I can verify that the instructions provided by code65536 work. I successfully updated the firmware and it works now.

After 2 years of not having a working Cd-Rom and really really wanting to install some new software... I'm incredibly grateful for your instructions. We now have a working Slimtype Combo LSC-24082K!

Also, I was wondering if it matters whether the "Slimtype Combo LSC-24082KX" flash program on the LiteOn site shouldn't be used to flash "Slimtype Combo LSC-24082K."

Usually, though not always, an "x" at the end of a model type indicates 'and all other models in this series'.

For instance

Meade DS2090a and the Meade DS2090k would be included in the Meade DS2090X.

You could probably use it to flash it... but that it based on that assumption.
