I would avoid this drive at all cost. Just installed SHM-160P6S received from newegg. Just like noted in this tread, it won't write DVD at advertised speed. It wont even read a regular DVD! All this despite upgrading to PS5 firmware. Shipping costs and newegg restocking fees make such that it's not even worth an RMA. It's going to the straight to the trash bin...

Jeez, I'll give you $10 for it and pay the shipping.

No problems here with the drive on IDE or USB.

Have these drives been incorrectly labelled? On the web site I only see: SHM-165P6S, SHM-165H6S, SHW-160P6S and SHW-160H6S but no SHM-160P6S or SHM-160H6S. And look what they said to ares139:

As SHM-160P6S,we don`t have any information about it.
For those who have the drives, can you read/write DVD-RAM with your SHM-160P6S?

-X- , THX for the update.

One last question for you all.
How are your IDE jumpers configured? Master/Slave or Cable Select when using the SHW-160P6S? Are you able to run 2 DVD units on one IDE channel?

I found a post on the Newegg site for this drive that claimed not using the CS setup caused the drive not to recognize inserted discs alternatively between the two DVDs on that channel, that ws part of the problem I was having. Sure thing, my SHW-160P6S will recognize a disc if it is the only DVD drive on the channel, jumper in CS, and plugged into the end plug (master). In this mode it will burn and recognize a disc.

When I add a second DVD-ROM with jumper in CS on the same channel to the middle connector, neither drive will recognize a disc. Same holds true if I configure jumpers to Master & Slave for the 2 drives on one channel. Really odd.

Any experience out there with this one?
THX much.

I have mine on a single IDE port so I removed the jumpers since they are not needed. You really shouldn't use cable select unless you have configured a cable select system.

I have configured several hundred IDE drives (hard drives, optical drives, other drives (ZIP, etc) ) in my time, and my experience is that you are safer setting the drive with a jumper as either MASTER or SLAVE. MOST of the time (emphasis on MOST) it doesn't matter whether you use CABLE SELECT or manually select MASTER/SLAVE, but sometimes it does matter. And when it does matter, you are always better off with a manual selection of either MASTER or SLAVE.

This is, of course, just my opinion based on my experiences, and your mileage may vary.....

*How* did you upgrade to 16*5*P6S firmware when 1) there are no unscrambled firmwares available, 2) Omnipatcher doesn't support the drive to allow cross flashing ? Or is "PS5" an actual name of a firmware revision for the 160p6s ?

-X- & HenryNettles - THX for the feedback.
I agree, using not using the cable select is the way to go. Finally got my 160P6S drive figured out, it was a incompatible NVidia IDE driver. The Nvidia Force2 IDE driver I had with my BioStar mobo was version 5.10.2600.307 - it caused all my burn/read problems and issues with Master/Slave. This version did not allow/show PIO or DMA settings/adjustments for the IDE channel. I know, odd.

Either way I rolled back to the MS 5.1.2600.0 IDE driver and I was able to go back to MS/SL jumper settings, initialize discs on read, and burn. I did update to the latest NVidia IDE driver, 5.1.2600.446 but it forces my DVD-ROM to PIO mode. Trying to force DMA mode horked something up, locking up the PC on boot. Rolled back to the MS driver and have DMA mode on all IDE channels.

I still am not able to read previously burned 1x layer DVD-Rs burned on my older BTC drive but I can live with that and use the DVD-ROM.

Worker,
The latest firmware for the SHW(M)-160P6S is DR16PS05.zip available on the Lite-on IT site http://www.liteonit.com/ODD/English/...e_dvd%20rw.asp

THX all!

Random question: why do discs burned on my LITE-ON DVDRW SHW-160P6S PS05 show up as being recorded with a SONY DW-Q120A PS05?

Strangely, I had the same problem with my 160p6s. With the 160p6s, with jumper in Master and a secondary drive in slave, the 160p6s would not play a dvd. It said region code was not set. I played with jumper settings and finally after setting the secondary drive jumper at cs, I went into the bios and had to turn the secondary drive to auto and then it recognized both drives and both drives will now play.
First time I have ever had this happen.
I also downloaded LTNRPC and made the 160p6s a region free drive and that did not help.

*Sigh* anyone know how to downgrade back to PS01? Ever since I applied PS05 to my drive, I cannot burn ANY DVD whatsoever (PS08 didn't fix it, either). I knew I shouldn't have tried to fix something that wasn't broken...

Just flash it back to PS01. It will tell you that it is a earlier version and just say yes. Hope you saved it. I doubt it is a fw problem though. There are some here with PS05 and it works fine.

But, it *came* with PS01. Never downloaded it or flashed it. It was the original firmware. And ever since PS05/PS08 was applied, I cannot burn any DVD whatsoever. CD-R/RW's work like a charm, though.

Just to let people know I recently purchased this drive for zipzoomfly. The burner does nor recognize DVR + or Dvr-, and does not recognize dual layer media, so flashed to new firmware Pso8 and still a no go, Iwill Be RMA ing this drive tommorrow. My other liteon drive on the same channel works fine.

@jamcgrif2: Guess I'm not alone there huh? Mine worked perfectly at first, though. I just had to give into the urge to update the firmware. Now it is effectively a CD-burner. Can't burn DVDs at all. They will act as if they are burning, but at the very end they stop prematurely. I have one disc that I made several attempts on, and now the bottom of it literally looks like a bulls-eye, with data written, then a blank spot, then some more data, then another blank spot and so on. Completely unreadable.

What Type Dvd+r are you using, the mid code on the disks. If you are using good quality media i suggest you Rma the drive. I have searched and their seems too be several other people who have bought this drive and had problems. There may just be a bad batch of theses drives out. I bought the retail version and had the same problem you are having, and I sent mine in for a return.
