I figured I would let the experts reply, but this thread doesn't get much action. I believe the only good dual layer discs are Verbatims. These are MKM MID.

I haven't bought any yet. I'm waiting until I can buy a few inkjet printables without taking out a bank loan. This might take a while

I haven't had time to do much, but I have a spindle of Verbatim DataLife Plus MCC003 inkjet printable and wanted to try them. It's interesting to see the changes from solidburn only, to hypertuning, to online hypertuning. The two below are solidburn only, followed by hypertuning.

Below are the MCC003 scans (8X burn, same as above) with online hypertuning (but not hypertuning) turned on.

For good measure, I also scanned the MCC003 8x burn with online hypertuning on in cd dvd speed. The first is scanned on the SH-16A7S, and the second with a Benq DW-1650.

By the way, I'm unable to reliably get jitter on the 16A7S -- if I set it in the advanced options and try to scan, cd dvd speed won't run the disc quality scan (just sits there). I did get it at one point -- maybe when I still had ASPI installed (not sure) -- but ASPI is killed now (because the LiteOn Smartburn utility hangs when ASPI is installed).

You are not the only one with the jitter test problem. I started a thread in the media testing forum.

I don't remember having this problem when I first got this "jitter" version of CDspeed. It seems to have crept up on me. Now I find the first scan will start after five or ten minutes. Subsequent scans take longer to start. Then I need to re-boot.

Jitterbug anyone?

Steve b - I seem to be having some success with the jitter scan -- see your other thread at http://club.cdfreaks.com/showpost.ph...19&postcount=8

My first ever Liteon DVD burner, so bare with me.
Got some different results with Verbatim 16x DVD+R.
Got 2 packs of them.
1 is a 10-pack Cakebox (made in India), the other is a 5 pack Color Disc (made in Taiwan). Both are MCC004 though.

For some strange reason, it won't burn the 10-pack at the speeds I choose.
16x will burn it at 12x and 12x is always burned at 8x. Weird.
The colored discs don't have that problem, they all burned at the chosen speed.

From the 10-pack
MCC004 @ 8x (12x was chosen)
Smartburn 3.1.16t, SB/HT/OS : on

Nice burns j999d! You could try the FB-EOS FW if you like. Just make sure you backup your EEPROM before trying it.

Thanks.
Already made a backup of the EEPROM yesterday, but haven't flashed it (yet)
Will flashing the drive allow me to burn those Verbatim discs (10- pack cakebox) at the chosen speeds?
Because I don't understand why the drive won't allow me to burn it at those speeds, but it does with the colored discs.

I burned 1 disc on my old NEC3500 at 12x, and it all went fine.

Just as a reminder to myself what weird burners Lite-On A7/A1 are, I burned a disc with my SH-16A7S@LH-16A1S (ALL OFF in SB, OPC Reset). Unexpected problems around 0.4GB, which doesn't seem to bother BenQ and NEC though .

Another weird one, not typical at all for these Memorex CMC E01's, burned @6x with All Off in SmartBurn (for comparison, the same burn with a Plextor on the next disc from this spindle: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showpost.ph...&postcount=198 ):

New 25 spindle Prodisc Verbatim Printable MCC 004 (tall lip, (c) 2005), burned with SH-16A7S@DH-20A1S @8X (All Off in SB, OPC cleared, LM & HT reset).

Looks like a bad spin-up ruined the start of the burn. This firmware makes the drive a poor reader, it didn't recognize a pressed movie DVD I've never had a problem with before and it frequently slowed down when ripping others.

Back to square #1: flashed back to original firmware, restored EEPROM and reset everything (all done in Linux, C0deKing's tools rock!). Next disc from same spindle, the tiniest scratch at the edge prevented a 98 score. Very happy with my first Prodisc spindle, never tried them before.

SH-16A7S@DH-20A1S UX14 new! with some older EMTEC DVD-R 1-4x certified "Premium" "Digital Video Quality" media. Pretty decent result at rated speed, all on in SmartBurn.

The commercial DVD it didn't recognize with UX11 is OK now.

50% OverSpeed. Much better, but I'd still wait the extra 5 min.

Panasonic TYG03 (GH000073), SB All On, 6:00 even.

This spindle just isn't any better. Panasonic TYG03 aren't necessarily better than Verbatim TYG03 for me.

SH-16A7S - WS04 FB
SB All On - OPC cleared
TDK - TDK 003 (MIL)

I still love this little drive, my first SATA and the only internal in my main PC for over a year now (apart from some (very) short stints with new acquisitions)). Whooshy-smooth and quiet, just can't scan @8X - first Lite-On that did this... still can't believe I've been 3 times unlucky with coarse A1 drives.

Old style packaging (c)2006 CMC 25 spindle. Not quite as even as my (c)2005 Prodisc spindle (see post #43). TRT OK.
