Lite-On LH-20A1L not reading discs

LiteOn / PLDS / Sony Writer Discuss, Lite-On LH-20A1L not reading discs at CD, DVD and Blu-ray Writers forum; I just got this device in my box and am having trouble. It will not read or recognize previously burnt discs. I upgraded the firmware as suggested in other posts but it does not seem to help. This thing will not stay here long if it does nothing.
