Burn speed set @18X but after reaching almost 9X it fell back and burned @6X

It was a clearance deal at Office Depot. I got 3 25 packs. They are all gone now.

The cheap dual layer media was a huge price mistake by Office Depot. Evidently thousands of these 25 packs were sold for $5.01 US - see this FatWallet thread . Other retailers were even price-matching OD's mistaken price.

Also, I've seen some posts on Asian sites (I think) that appear to say that the GLOB firmware came installed on their 18A1P's.

Received yesterday. Installed in Plumax PM-525C2-PPB V4 enclosure on firewire. Reaches 16X burning speed with ease.
First burn TYG03 VALUELINE batch 000125
Second burn TDK White Printable 16X+R from Costco- marginal at best media I like to use for testing
Very pleased with this writer.

Won't quite reach 18X in external enclosure but still fast @ 5:27 with perfect TRT despite stumbling at the end.

While not reaching 18x it's impressive to see that it goes well beyond 16x! What kind of enclosure, resp. what chipset is used?

Plextools says 1734 C1 errors.

Good burn, but it looks like this drive is no good for scanning CDs.

Beta/Jitter scan stopped with an uncorrectable error (may not be the disc but a bug in the 760)
