It's like...It makes me feel alive, you know. It makes me feel human. The only way I could feel this sad now is if I felt something really good before. So I have to take the bad with the good. So I guess what I'm feeling is like a beautiful sadness. Courage and perseverance have a magical talisman, before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish into air. I am so glad that GWB's 8 year COD game is finally over. The most important things are the hardest to say. They are the things you get ashamed of, because words diminish them-words shrink things that seemed limitless when in your head to no more than living size when they're brought out. But it's more than that, isn't it? The most important things lie close to wherever your secret heart is buried, like landmarks to a treasure your enemies would love to steal away. And you may make revelations that cost you dearly only to have people look at you in a funny way, not understanding what you've said at all, or why you thought it was so important that you almost cried while saying it. That's the worst, I think. When the secret stays locked within not for want of a teller but for the want of an understanding ear. - Stephen King, intro to "The Body." |

| Sony SONY16D1, 16x branded, HT/OS/OHT off, burned at 18x 20A1H@18A1P firewire external enclosure. This enclosure tops out at 16.5x but it's good to see the H and P hardware appears to be the same except for the Lightscribe indexing.

| Thanks a lot for the pictures, bichi! Encouraged by what I'm seeing here recently, I picked up a November GL0C with high hopes and it still resonates like my previous September GL03 did. And guess what, the spindle motor is the same one you're showing for the September unit! It burns like crap as well, with high errors at the beginning (much like Ssseth's 20A1H - see my scans attached, second burn of each MID). I'm starting to think these are being made in two different locations, so it's not the date of manufacture, but the origin that counts. The shop where I bought it has both September and November boxes, so they could be from the same lot/shipment. Mine's a retail LH-18A1P487C Made in China with S/N 23364640xxxx. It seems to smoothen out after a couple hours use and warming up (the same disc that was loud at first can become quiet), but this is just not good enough. Lite-On/BenQ has got me ticked-off really well now - just another example of a corporate cock-up for me. |

| Cressida, - good info! Agreed, it might be related to part numbers and country, than date, eh? ala42, - difficult to quantify, but did a quick, unscientific noise measurement with db meter, set to "A" weighting - CDSpeed v4.5, benchmark test - PN: LH-18A1P186C; Nov 2006 - same disk used for tests to negate "balance" differences - sensor placed at two locations: a) 1 inch/2.5cm in front of drives - baseline: 58dbA - LH-18A1P: 67dba - 165P6S: 66dba ("hissing" noise, rather than lower freq "growling") b) touching middle of case, side (to get mechanical coupling for low frequencies) - baseline: 57dba - LH-18A1P: 67dba - 165P6S: 61dba (lower freq, "growling/vibration" type noise) - repeating: not a proper test, would need a vibration measuring tool at these frequencies - older Sept 2006 unit is not installed - in my instance, my case is an old, circa 1990, heavy, steel/aluminium case and has very low resonance - could see how newer, thinner, lighter cases with less mass, plastic fronts, etc., could resonate and sound louder - link to case pictures: http://www.esnips.com/web/ConroeReady Attached picture of LH-18A1P compared to older LTN-1693 - anti-vibration mounting changed, where LH-18A1P's PUH/motor plate floats with much less restriction than older, LTN-1693 mounting. (note LH-18A1P, no capture screws on "green" donuts) - note additional "mass," which appears to be added as a counter-weight, on older 1693 - guessing less restrictive mounting and lighter weight is causing more low freq vibration? - note more motor control lines (11 compared to 4) and guessing more motor poles (not shown) - also guessing faster acceleration and less noise with more motor poles on older 1693? - less motor poles, no counterweight = less cost..... - pic: http://premium1.uploadit.org/bichi00...ntdiff-001.jpg (you guys are making me work too hard....) |

| 18A1P->20A1P KL05 firmware Taiyo Yuden DVD+R 16X unbranded burnt @ 12x SB: on, all other options OFF. Prior to that i have done a transfer rate test and jitter but did not save results. TRT was a smooth curve - Jitter was steady at 10 % all the way, I'm used to 7.5%-8%, but I guess this is because of 12x burns. Those burn much better than my 8x DVD+R TY, I guess I was right all along TY is concentrating on 16x media now, the 8x media has gone down in quality. I consider tis an excellent burn @ 12x - I expected much higher PIF totals at that burn speed, but it's great. |
