Hello Jan,

short question: Did you get your drive in Germany ?

I looked for it at any online-store I knew, but couldn`t find it.

A guy at the German Lite-On Hotline told me, the LH-18A1P will not be available here before end of october...

i don't think it's possible. both drives share the same chipset, but that isn't enough for the firmware to work.

i don't think they do, but they have to be the exact same drives (hardwarewise) to allow crossflashing.
ok, there are some exceptions like the liteon 451s which can be upgraded to 832s, but that's not comparable with these new drives.

we need a full review of every mechanical part to be sure...

neither the previous mediatek based samsung nor the new mtk based samung were liteon rebadges.
the samsung is not a liteon.

The drive was provided by Lite-On for our evaluation/testing purpose.

So it could be that the drive will be available in Germany in October.

Jan, would it be possible to have a review of this drive please. Also could there be any product changes before it goes into retail manufacturing?

Hi Zion12, and welcome to our forum.

Yes, I will make a preview of the Lite-On 18A1P as soon as possible; however I need to wait until the replacement drive arrives, as something unexpected happened to the first drive.

To answer you second question very short, I am not aware for any (product) changes at this time. The first drive I got was manufactured in August 2006 and uses the MediaTek MT1898E – 0628-ACSL KHC05 chipset.

Thanks Jan70. Looking forward to your review. My LG GSA 4163B died on me and I was suggested to go for a Liteon. By reading news post I learnt that is 18x burner is expected sometime in Oct 2006. Was just curious to know how the first 18x Liteon drive would perform and if it is worth the investment.

A Froogle search reveals that a few websites already have it stocked.
It may be that it shows up at specialized computing stores such as Arlt or K&M soon. Not so sure about Media Markt or Saturn, they rarely stock LiteOn anyway.
