Hey guys, I just built a new computer. It's a Foxconn Bloodrage with a Core i7 920. Everything seems to work great except when I burn movies. I'm using Nero 9, DVDFAB HD Decrypter, and DVD Shrink 3.2. When I rip movies the movie comes out perfectly. When I burn the movie using Shrink the movies play fine in the computer's DVD drive. In commercial DVD Players attached to TVs the movies don't play at all. In one of mine it won't read the movies I make at all in the other it will play but skip tons of scenes. I've uninstalled and reinstalled everything. Any ideas anyone?

Welcome to the forum

Most of times the cause is a low quality disc, or the wrong burning speed, or both.

Can you provide more details about the burner, the firmware currently installed and the discs you are using (and the burning speed)?

I'm using the stock firmware, I've burned on Memorex 16x discs (at 4x,8x, and 16x speeds). I know it's not the best but my other lite-ons have never had issues. Also, I've tried using Verbatim 4x discs. The burner itself is the standard Lite-On IHAS324. It's sata. The discs work perfectly in PCs, which is why I'm not sure what the problem could be. The other computer I have has no issues burning working movies to the same media.

Probably this drive is not able to write well these discs, and the standalone is a bit too picky.

You can try to update firmware (get latest version here), but the best solution remain to use quality discs.

Verbatim 4x discs are good media, but probably are not more supported in the firmware (they are rather old media). Maybe you'll get better results with more recent media like Verbatim 16x discs burning them at 12x

I guess the question would be why does it work in PCs but not in the standalone player? I've been using -R discs.

Is there anything possibly wrong with the burner?

I can try to get other media, but I don't want to waste money on media that doesn't work or have to keep gambling on different kinds of discs.

Most of times computer drives have better reading capabilities. This explain why a bad burned disc can be read in a computer drive and not in a standalone.

Nowdays most of standalone players are able to read burned discs, so there is not more a real difference about +R or -R discs. To improve compatibility, however, you can try to use a +R disc changing the booktype in ROM (for what I know all Liteon drives allow this). But if the disc still contains too many errors and the standalone is a picky reader, then the disc will be still unreadable.

Can you run a quality test on a burned disc with your liteon drive using cd-dvd speed? Then post here the picture

Here I made this using a burned disc I made earlier. I have no idea what it means

This test reports the amount of errors on the burned disc. More errors means more difficulties in reading the disc.

Sorry I forgot to mention before Can you repeat the test at 4x speed (16x gives unreliable results)

The test is not so bad, errors are not really so high, except for that spike at 2 GB. Probably your standalone is really picky, and these errors on the disc are sufficient to make it freeze during reading

Is it an old standalone? Maybe cleaning the optical pickup on the standalone can improve reading performance

No, it's a brand new drive. So probably not anything wrong with the optical pickup. I'm going to go buy some Verbatim 16x and see what happens.

I'll let you know the results. If anyone else has input I'd gladly accept it.

I got some Verbatim discs. I burned one at 12x and it didn't work. I put it through the disc check, and I'm more than pretty sure this one is worse than the last. Any advice guys? I'd like to explore every possibility before I consider returning the drive (what a hassle that would be). Thanks for all the help so far.

What kind of movie are you trying to burn and what are you using to burn with?

I'm burning a DVD of a movie I've burned before. I'm used DVD HD Dectrypter to rip the files. I'm using DVD Shrink to take those files and burn them on the disc. I'm using examples of two movies that I've burned before with success on my old burner. I'd rather not name the movies though. Is that specific enough?

What is the brand name of your standalone Dvd player?

This is the drive I have: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...65188&CatId=89

Sorry for the link, but it has the pictures of the box and all. It's a Lite On brand.

Maybe you can try to install latest firmware to see if this improves writing quality.

The standalone is really picky if it is not able to read these discs (the quality test is not really bad)

I tried with new firmware and it didn't do anything. I tried with three separate stand alone drives. One is a little older, the other I bought last year, and a PS3. The movie wouldn't read at all in the older one (claimed the disc was diry), in the newer one it reads but it skips at random (always in the same exact places in the movie, skips the menu entirely then plays for about 2 minutes then skips to another scene), and not at all in the PS3. The frustrating thing is that it reads perfectly in the two PCs I've tried it in.

I keep thinking it might be a weird software error or something. I keep getting the exact same glitches in the exact same spots no matter what media I burn at, what speed I burn it at, etc. I'm just not sure what could be causing these problems.

Can you try to burn the same movie on a different drive (you can ask a friend if you don't have another burner)? If discs burned in another drive are perfectly readable, you can know for sure that the disc is not the culprit.

If also with a different burner the standalone is not able to read burned discs, then you got a bad batch of media

I just burned it with JUST DVD Fab (which I won't be able to do normally because I'm on a trial) and it worked. The disc plays in every single player in the house. Now, I'm relatively certain it's something with Nero 9 or DVDShrink 3.2. I have no idea what to look at though.

DVDShrink is very old. Need to find a newer and different program.
