I just know that this will be a layup for you all - I must be missing something. Just bot a lh-20a1s-10c and have it installed in my Dell Dimension 3100 (P4 - Gig Ram, 100 Gig unused disk space, XP-sp2). Its installed in the SATA 0 port (not sure bout this but in device manager is says location 0).

I can read "produced" DVDs and CDs - but cannot read burned CD-RW, DVD-RW, CD-R, DVD-R that had previously worked in onboard Dell Drive. I have attempted to burn a simple CD - but the rate was 1 or 2, when I expected to see something around 18. I haven't even thought about attempting a DVD!

I have flashed the firmware (DR209L02), I have uninstalled via device manager and let windows reinstall. I have no idea where to go next other than the rubbish dump.

Any help or thoughts would be great!

Not as easy as you might think, sabriana. A quick google reveals that your Dell has an Intel 915GV Express chipset, which uses an older SATA controller. Combine this with the limited 'System Setup' options of your OEM PC and I'm not sure where this will go. One would expect it to work on Intel with the standard Microsoft SATA driver that comes with XP, but if all else fails you can also try the Intel Matrix Storage driver from here . Can you post a CDSpeed Benchmark with one of the CD or DVD's it can read (see example below)?

Hi Cressida - thanks for once again coming to my rescue. But I solved this one myself! I went out and bought a new drive - and all is fine! It was a faulty drive and I'm sending the old one back. Didn't want to take up your time if it was easily solved. Thanks again!
