HELP!!! 32123s burner is slow

hi guys, I'm pretty novice to the intricacies of cd burning, but I'm sure I'm not getting the full potential out of my new liteon cd burner and was hoping for some help.

I have upgraded my 12x burner which would do a 650 mb cd in about 5mins 30secs to the liteon 32x12x40x burner which at the moment is burning 650mb cd's in about 5 mins. I was certainly hoping for a bigger improvement than 30 secs.

My system is a p3 933mhz, motherboard is asus cusl2-c i have 256 mb ram, cd-rw is on secondary ide as master (100mhz ultra ata) and the hdd is on primary master (100 mhz ultra ata - seagate 7200 rpm). I am using the asus supplied ultra ata ide drivers on windows 2000 pro, which automatically turns the dma mode on on both ide channels.

i use nero 5.5.7.2 th entire os is a fesh install about 2 days old. I can see one problem in that when i do a burn i can see the buffer going up and down. I'm sure this cant be right because the hdd speed and ide channel speed should both be mouch faster than the cd-r burning speed of 4,800 kbps so there should be no reason for the buffer to empty out b4 it is burnt to disc.

Can anyone help me out please????

Just a personal experience: In many cases the Intel IDE driver is doing more bad than good.

I recommend you to download Nero CD-Speed from www.cdspeed2000.com and measure the read and write speeds.

Nero CD-Speed will also tell you the real speed the writer is writing at (It will not write all types of media at 32X).

And it also depends on:

What was you writing? Music data?
Writing on the fly from a CD-ROM or writing from the harddrive?

Thanks for the advice, I have actually solved the problem now and am getting the full 32x burning speed from my liteon (WAHOOOOO!).

My Solution:

I discovered this yesterday b4 your post but yes oc freak you are the wise one intel ata drivers are a definite no no for everyone!.. Windows 2000 native udma drivers appear to be much more effective (funny how intel can build it but have no idea how to use it!).

I measured my speeds by using clonecd after reading all about this little program from you guys, and saw huge differences when i changed the drivers. I'd use cd speed, but umm.. kinda embarressingly never realy bothered to find out how to use it. Wish it would proimpt me as to what cd it actually wants in the drive to read. All it does is just stop me straight away saying wrong cd in drive.

Anyways back to the point, the 32x speed mentioned was only measured directly off the hard drive, I use daemon tools to open images i make when backing up my dvd's to svcd format then do a cd copy on the fly. I havent measured the speed from actual cd to cd, though i dont expect it to be as fast as hard drive to cd, but as long as i have reached the max speed i know that liteon have done their job right.

I've just purchased and installed the 32X LiteOn (3123s). I have the same problem with burn speed being sluggish. Copying data from my HDD (7200 RPM) to a 700 MB CDR takes me 6:05 at 32X. When I read your solution I thought I would give it a try. You said that you installed the native windows drivers. My question is: Did you delete the Intel Ultra ATA Drivers or did you just go to Control Panel, System, Device Manager and update the drivers for the LiteOn without deleting the Intel Ultra ATA drivers. My operating system is Windows 98 SE and I have an ASUS cusl2-C motherboard. If the driver update does not increase speed, would you please send me some other possible solutions.

If you have intel ata driver installed there is normally an uninstallation program as well included. Or maybe you could find it under controlpanel --> add/remove programs

You may also download Nero CD-Speed and measure the write speed. Just insert an empty CD-R disc and hit the start button.

Then it should start writing at 16X jump to 20X then 24X and finally 32X near the middle of the disc.

If it do not increase speed --> try other media.

If the curve looks weird/bumpy all time --> DMA is probably not enabled for the writer.

Go to device manager, find your Writer under CD-ROM's and check it's properties. Is there a checkbox for DMA? Make sure that it's checked.

I had the same problem with my 32x LiteOn & Win2000 Pro.
When the Liteon is burning the led on the front would switch from red to orange all the way through the burn.
It wouldn't burn faster than 18x at any point.
Total time to burn disk was always close to 6 mins at 32x burn.

In my case I have a AMD 761 Chipset with a Via IDE controller.
I was using the standard Windows Via ide drivers.
I downloaded the Via IDE filter & Bus Master drivers.
Applied the filter first, reboot, no difference.
Applied the bus master, Reboot, Drive stop working altogether.

Uninstalled the bus master & changed the IDE cable from a ATA66/100 to a standard IDE cable.

Now burns a full 700mb in 3mins 18 seconds & the led on the front stays RED the whole way.

Not sure if changing the cable or putting on the bus master drivers playing with some settings with the ide tool then uninstalling fixed the problem.

Just posting this as it was also a IDE driver problem but not an intel like the others.

I recommend you to download Nero CD-Speed from www.cdspeed2000.com and measure the read and write speeds. Nero CD-Speed will also tell you the real speed the writer is writing at (It will not write all types of media at 32X). And it also depends on: What was you writing? Music data? Writing on the fly from a CD-ROM or writing from the harddrive? __________________ I'm a real freak in many aspects!

Or maybe you could find it under controlpanel --> add/remove programs You may also download Nero CD-Speed and measure the write speed. Just insert an empty CD-R disc and hit the start button. Then it should start writing at 16X jump to 20X then 24X and finally 32X near the middle of the disc. If it do not increase speed --> try other media. If the curve looks weird/bumpy all time --> DMA is probably not enabled for the writer. Go to device manager, find your Writer under CD-ROM's and check it's properties. Is there a checkbox for DMA? Make sure that it's checked. __________________ I'm a real freak in many aspects!

My Solution: I discovered this yesterday b4 your post but yes oc freak you are the wise one intel ata drivers are a definite no no for everyone!.. Windows 2000 native udma drivers appear to be much more effective (funny how intel can build it but have no idea how to use it!). I measured my speeds by using clonecd after reading all about this little program from you guys, and saw huge differences when i changed the drivers. I'd use cd speed, but umm.. kinda embarressingly never realy bothered to find out how to use it. Wish it would proimpt me as to what cd it actually wants in the drive to read. All it does is just stop me straight away saying wrong cd in drive. Anyways back to the point, the 32x speed mentioned was only measured directly off the hard drive, I use daemon tools to open images i make when backing up my dvd's to svcd format then do a cd copy on the fly. I havent measured the speed from actual cd to cd, though i dont expect it to be as fast as hard drive to cd, but as long as i have reached the max speed i know that liteon have done their job right. anyways thanks for your help everyone!.. I know only one replied but i could see lots took a look at it for me... your all a bunch of legends!

Luv To Burn New on Forum Join Date: May 2002 Location: California Posts: 1	I've just purchased and installed the 32X LiteOn (3123s). I have the same problem with burn speed being sluggish. Copying data from my HDD (7200 RPM) to a 700 MB CDR takes me 6:05 at 32X. When I read your solution I thought I would give it a try. You said that you installed the native windows drivers. My question is: Did you delete the Intel Ultra ATA Drivers or did you just go to Control Panel, System, Device Manager and update the drivers for the LiteOn without deleting the Intel Ultra ATA drivers. My operating system is Windows 98 SE and I have an ASUS cusl2-C motherboard. If the driver update does not increase speed, would you please send me some other possible solutions.

rocky500 New on Forum Join Date: May 2002 Posts: 16	I had the same problem with my 32x LiteOn & Win2000 Pro. When the Liteon is burning the led on the front would switch from red to orange all the way through the burn. It wouldn't burn faster than 18x at any point. Total time to burn disk was always close to 6 mins at 32x burn. In my case I have a AMD 761 Chipset with a Via IDE controller. I was using the standard Windows Via ide drivers. I downloaded the Via IDE filter & Bus Master drivers. Applied the filter first, reboot, no difference. Applied the bus master, Reboot, Drive stop working altogether. Uninstalled the bus master & changed the IDE cable from a ATA66/100 to a standard IDE cable. Now burns a full 700mb in 3mins 18 seconds & the led on the front stays RED the whole way. Not sure if changing the cable or putting on the bus master drivers playing with some settings with the ide tool then uninstalling fixed the problem. Just posting this as it was also a IDE driver problem but not an intel like the others.
