I have a HP DVD writer 1040d and want to flash to LH-20A1H. I use Flash Utility v2.2.2 to read the firmware (saved it as EH25.BIN with 2MB size) and EEPROM Utility v3.8.3 to read the content of EEPROM (saved it as

Hi Code King.
Your tools are very nice.
I have a HP DVD writer 1040d and want to flash to LH-20A1H.
I use Flash Utility v2.2.2 to read the firmware (saved it as EH25.BIN with 2MB size) and EEPROM Utility v3.8.3 to read the content of EEPROM (saved it as EEPRPM1040.bin with 8KB size).
Before flash the “20A1H.LL0C.stock.exe” I would like to know in the case I want to flash back to 1040d can I simply use Flash Utility to write back EH25.BIN? or how is the procedure to do this?
Highly appreciate your reply.

Hi peti1160. Yes you can flash your saved original firmware back to the drive, to restore it to a 1040d.

Flash done. Now I can see "LITE-ON DVDRW LH-20A1H LL0C".
Very nice.
Will try back flash later to be sure.

H..mm! Back flash problem.

I did following steps:
1. Restore EEPROM – with previously saved bin file EEPROM1040.BIN – using EEPROM Utility v3.8.3: well done.
2. Flash back – with previously saved bin file EH25.BIN – using new Flash Utility v2.2.3: writing error message popped up!

I thing there may be some differences between two versions so I flash it again with v2.2.2: same error message.

Then I use v2.2.2 to flash 20A1H.LL0C.stock.exe again and got the same writing error.

The system still can see “LITE-ON DVDRW LH-20A1H LL0C” drive but it doesn’t work. One strange thing happened: I can eject the tray with eject button on drive but cannot load back. It looks like the drive gets no power.

Please help to get my drive work back again.

I've just run a whole bunch of tests here and I can't find any problem with the Flash Utility v2.2.3. What Flash ID does your drive have? Did you enable "Update boot code"?

The BIN file is fine and I just flashed it to my 20A1H using the Flash Utility v2.2.3. I had Update boot code enabled.

Sorry I don't have the drive in hand now. As I remember the Flash ID was recognized well and some thing like EF 0 0 24 (?).
I didn't enable "Update boot code".

Oh yes. Now I see your attached picture with right Flash ID.
Is it necessary to enable Update boot code? or my 1rst step rewrite EEPROM could effect the flashing?

Tried again with Update boot code enable without success. Same writing error.

I doubt I have to go through DOS flash. What do you suggest?

Do you think EH25.BIN is scramble file so you unlock it?

I guess the structure of new flasher is the same (?) of 20A1H.LL0C.stock.exe (the size is different) and I'm afraid it won't work. Except the very first time all flashings of LL0C got writing error that means something was done wrong in flash memory and it prevents all further flashings.

One more question: should I run directly from exe file or should I use Flash Utility?

The flasher is unlocked so any firmware version can be flashed (hardware still needs to be correct).

Just run the exe file.
