EEPROM Utility v1.3.2 has been released to address an issue with Window 98 and Me, which doesn't support SPTI. I also added the date info to the drive ID, in the drive list.

Changes:
1/ Searches for drives on SPTI and ASPI.
2/ Shows drive date in the drive list.

super Thx to codeking once again you are the true codegod

Thanks DiggnSaeg. I'll correct this in the next version. I'll hold off a little bit before releasing it, as the mods will get sick of me always wanting the first post changed.

Seems to be working fine on my Win98 (via Virtual PC). Of course, I can't test any of its functions on an emulated drive, but the program starts up and seems to be able to detect and display the drives correctly which would suggest that plscsci is working right and thus the rest of the program probably works right.

Yes, got 1k files from both the 1213s and a CRX320E combo (Win98SE)
They appear to contain the usual stuff - SONY CORPORATION and TST1 / TST2 entries.

@code65536 & @Matth
Thanks guys. That's good to know.

@mortimus
Firstly, I recommend that you use the backup function, before you do anything and keep a copy on removable media. You can use the reset learn feature before or after a flash, it does not matter.

does the utility work only if ASPI is installed?

I use Win2k, on one machine it has ASPI installed, the utility worked on that one. 2nd machine is new win2k and does not have System ASPI installed yet, only Nero ASPI. The utility did not show up on the 2nd machine. If I try to start NeroInfoTool or go to device manager and check Lite-On drive property after trying to run the utility, those would not work any more.

I'm also a little confused by the "learning ability", I have a 411S after on the 4th burn (or 5th if you count one failed during burning), the burn quality was good through out except for the very end has high PIF, but still good. But the burn after that one was bad, bad burn quality, much worse than the previous one .

I thought by then the optimum would be reach and most of burns after that should have similar quality??? I don't know....

Thank you.

It needs ASPI if SPTI is not support. This is normal for most of the DVD writer tools. I believe SPTI is only standard in Win XP.

It depends a lot on the quality of your media. What are you using? If the media is variable then the drive cannot compensate for this, even though it will try. Also some media codes are not learnt.

I'm not quite sure, does "Reset learnt media" reset it in the drive, or in the extracted eeprom image which would need to be reloaded?

It resets the eproom area *in the drive* in which are stored the infos about the media you have burnt.

Yes, it directly works on the drive like this.

1/ It reads the EEPROM from the drive.
2/ It clears the media calibration data.
3/ It writes the EEPROM back to the drive.

As always, make sure you backup your EEPROM first.

Hey, I'm a newbie wid a Liteon SOHW-1633s and I was wondering why the BIN files from the EEPROM tool are 1k. I thought BIN files were for firmware .... so does that mean there are two eeproms - one for firmware and the other for factory calibration data? and when I backup my EEPROM - i get the letters SONY CORPORATION inside the BIN when I open it in an editor... Is this normal?

The drive has flash memory for the firmware, which is 1MB in size and EEPROM memory for data storage, which is 1KB. Yes the EEPROM contains the factory calibration data and the text "SONY CORPORATION" is quite normal and has been there since the 812S, when Sony purchased a large shareholding of LiteOn.

Maybe a daft question but here goes anyway. I've been getting "spikes" lately on my Lite-On 851s with Verbatim (MCC) media. Up till now this combination has been excellent but recently (last 5-10 burns), there have been 2 "spikes" in pretty much the same place on the discs, regardless of the content. The 2nd spike isn't too bad but the first one causes some pixellation in my set-top DVD player for the duration of the spike.

Will reseting my EEPROM make any difference to this?

It might. What firmware are you using? Can you show me a scan of the disc.

@ mparter if they are singular spikes and they are at the speed-change or recalibration points, then they are probably de/recouple errors. If they are not singular spikes, but 'mountains' or 'towers' instead, you will need to post a Kprobe 2.4.2 BLER scan done at 4x. before ejecting disc, save scan as a .PNG file, and attach with the 'manage attachments' button in the 'go advanced' reply window. Resetting eeprom might help but probably not.

Here are some scans, all different content, same media from the same spindle.

Most recent scans first.

I initially thought it was a data throughput issue as the last 2 scans were done when the DVDRW was configured as a slave on the 2nd channel with a HDD as the primary on that channel (which is incidentally where the data was also coming from)

The first scan is from the DVDRW in another machine, configured as a master on the second channel with 2 HDD on the 1st channel.

Cheers for any advice
