4x using DVD Decrypter. I'm not sure what you mean by strategy, sorry.

That's ok. The strategy is the method used to burn the disc, based on it's media code.

You need to scan at 4x. This is the cdfreaks standard for comparison and I'm picking most of these spikes will disappear at that speed. KProbe seem to produce these spikes when scanning DVD-R, especially at higher scan speeds.

Also, the spike at the beginning of the last scan, looks like a flaw on the disc.

Had a funny feeling you would ask for this so here goes

Seems a bit better but there's still the "spike" at the beginning which correlates with the pixellation seen on my set-top DVD player.

Thanks for taking the time to look into this for me.

That looks like a flaw on the disc. It's not uncommon with MCC media? Some of my MCC002/003s do the same thing. Is it just this one disc or all discs you now burn?

mmm, at first glance, the discs appear fine but under closer inspection there's a slight bit of banding approx 1/2cm from the middle on a burnt disc. On an un-burnt disc, there's a very thin darker ring around the disc in the same are. Dodgy spindle?

Sounds like it. I'm surprised it's bad enough to cause your play to skip, as it doesn't look that bad at 4x, and I would have thought your player would be reading at a speed less than 4x.

It's no really skipping, it's just pixellating, but hey I'm a perfectionist

I would probably buy TY media but real ones are hard to come by in the UK at decent prices. Do you think I should just put this down to a bad batch and keep using them?

Or buy the 8x Verbatim's instead as I believe the 4x DVD-Rs are now old stock?

Thanks.

You could try GS0P. It's official firmware but it's not on Liteon's site yet. You can get it from my site. It might have some small improvement that will get it past the flaw in your media, and you can always go back to GS0K, if it's worse, by using the GS0K firmware, also on my site.

Hi, this is my first post on this forum so hello to everyone. As I have to start somewhere I will give you my problem because it sort of relates to this.

I have now had two 1633s over the last month. The first was replaced after about 3 weeks as it stopped reading cd's. The second which I have installed currently doesn't like writing DVD R+, even using the same media which worked on the first 1633 I had. Interestingly the first 1633 didn't like writing to Ritek -R.

The DVD + R I am using is made by Optodisc and worked fine but doesn't on my current 1633. I have even used a TDK +R and that won't write successfully either.

Is it possible resetting the "learnt media" will help. I want to make sure that whatever I do doesn't affect the warranty. I am waiting on my retailer to get some more 1633's so I can replace this one. BTW I have the latest firmware loaded and had the same problem with BSOJ firmware.

Any help would be appreciated.

@harry230
welcome to the forum.
as for reset learn media.it might help. but you wont really know till yeah burn 2 to 4 discs.
it is good practice to make a backup of the eeprom before you do this.
that way if it didnt help , you can always revert back e.g. restore eeprom
good luck and happy testing

Hi!

I decided I'm going out to buy a new burner too many probs!!
Nec 3500AG for 63€ it's going to be my pick.....

In the last week the quality of my burns was declining more and more... tonight I got two coaster in row.

So I thought, it's broken, fix it!

EEprom utility 1.3.2
Backup my eeprom as you always suggest,
Reset learn behaviour
Reset my computer and burn again

RESULTS
1 Burn failed
1 Coaster
and again 1 burn failed

Restore EEPROM previous working
1 burn failed

Upgrade from CG3B that it has been working till now to CG3E and now I got a coasters again.

All the disk that I've been burning are RicohR01 from ARITA (nierle), tried few different batch.

My system

P4 3.0 Ghz
Asus p4p800 deluxe
Maxtor sata 80gb
DVD rom LG 8162B
Sony DRU-700A

What else can I do?

Sorry fo rmy english...

Thanks anyway for the great job done from everyone in the forum and for the great burns I had till now

Hi,

thanks to all.

Evertything is back to normal.

My problem was related to the eeprom utility.
In fact after resetting the learn stuff for the first time, I had my first burn failure after 4 months.
Then I loaded the firmware cg3e (I was working with cg3b) and the old eeprom, but I had again the same bad behaviour that I had before resetting.

The last test I made was reset the eeprom, load the firmware again and check.

Now seems that the burner it's having a new life.

In any case yesterday afternoon I bought a NEC3500 and now my plan it's to use the Sony for scannng and burning CD.

Thanks again for the support and for the great utility

PS but why did I get that two failures???

It's very odd, especially when you loaded CG3E with your old EEPROM and it was still not right. Sounds like something in the hardware was not quite right. Did you happen to power off the system/drive before it started to work ok again?

Hi Codeking,

I don't know how clear I'm with my english.

Try to explain;

Getting worse and worse burn was the starting point.
Then I decided to reset with the eeprom utility.

After reset without reboot the computer I had 1 burn failed, then I restarted the computer and the following disk was a complite coaster (maybe I'll find it out in my room somewhere and post the scan), tryed again and I had another burn failed.

Then swicthed off the computer overnight.

Then I decided to restore the eeprom and upgrade the f/w from cg3b to cg3e. After rebooting the computer I had a coaster very similar to the one that I had before.

At this point I have been restting again and loading the cg3e again. The results have been perfett. 3 Ricohr01 @8X with PIF max 27 PI max 5 and overall PI 459, almost what I was used to.

I don't know seems to me that I had something wrong the first time I resetted my eeprom.

Tnx

PS Now I'm testing my nd-3500 and checking last f/w with my Sony.

I saw you postin some scan made with cg4e is it going to be ready soon??

How much better is the 411@811 patch, is it a noticeable improvement over Zebras Mod?

Let's just say it should be better . The amount of improvement will vary from drive to drive. Just backup your EEPROM first and try for yourself. You can always go back. I look forward to seeing your results.

i have windows xp sp1a (german), a Liteon sowh-1633s bs41 and a Toshiba sd-m1712 j004. the 1633s is master on secondary ide and the toshiba is slave on same ide.

i had the same problem with older versions of eeprom utility, but sometimes it worked so i thought it was my windows, but after formatting the problem still exists.

It's been tried with a 1213S@1633S. Can I get you to disconnect the Toshiba and see if the EEPROM Utility runs then. Do you have any SATA devices or external USB or 1394 devices connected?

Off to bed now.

That has happened to me a few times actually. I just ended the task and tried again and it usually works. Sorry code, shoulda told you earlier, but I thought it was my system causing the problem.
