I've got LiteOn DVD8801 burner and decided to crossflash it to BenQ DW1650.
I was looking for some manual but found nothing close to what I need.
Then in Russian forum.ixbt.com i finally found some instructions I need.
So here is my step-by-step manual

    1. You have LiteOn DVD8801 burner.
Pay attention to PBDS letters in left bottom side of drive label. PBDS - Philips Benq Digital Storage.

    2. Connect it to PC and after Windows starts it will be detected as ATAPI DVD DW 8X16X8X16 L.02

    3. Download all needed utilites
    Latest firmware BCIC dated 15.09.06
    Download BQFlasher 0.7.2
    Download wnaspi32.dll v.2.0.1.74
    4. Unpack BQFlasher.rar to some tmp folder, copy wnaspi32.dll and firmware BCIC.exe to this folder.
    5. Close all other programs (especially those which can request CD/DVD drive). Then start BQFlasher.exe and warning window will appear – agree with warnings

Then check if your LiteOn DVD8801 was selected as a drive for flashing and select a path to file BCIC.EXE (new firmware for drive).

    6. Everything is ready for flashing – if still want to crossflash you drive – press Flash button.
    7. Flashing will take up to 3 minutes – wait till the flashing procedure will ends and BQFlasher will ask you to reboot your PC.
    8. If everything is ok – you will get your drive recognized as BENQ DVD DD DW1650 [BCIC].

Special Benq features like Advanced Quality test and other will be available.

Please be aware that any cross-flashing will void the guarantee.

    I know it.
Now I wonder is there any way to flash back Benq DW1650 to DVD8801 as it was before flashing?

Yes, but you will need the L.02 firmware to make that possible.

It is not recommended to leave a disc in the drive while upgrading the firmware.

It is likely that the CD-R was already defective before you ripped it (most likely it already had cracks in the hub or something like that...)

    Which brand was it?

Hehe, I've heard of it happening a few times.

I seriously doubt that a drive crossflash could do that - I agree with Evilboy in that the disc must have had some defect. I've crossflashed to a 1650 myself, and the drive's still going strong.
