Because of all the ruckus about the NEC 3500A, I had to get one to see what it was all about.

First impression was, it's ugly. Second impression was, man can this drive burn well.

Then I saw the burn time, man is this drive slow. Looking back at the 25x0A I noticed that this was normal for the NEC writers. Maybe this was the key to there results.

So I decided to patch the LiteOn firmware to match the burn pattern of the NEC.

Here are the results. Sony RICOHJPNR01 was used. Of course the is LiteOn's favourite media so results with other media may not be as good.

As the NEC cannot do BLER scans, all scans were done in the 832S.

First the NEC 3500A:

I only have RITEKG04 and the NEC will only burn it at 4x (at the moment) but the same burn pattern the NEC uses for -R, can also be applied to the LiteOn.

Hi CodeKing the 3500A you used was it standard F/W or hacked.

As i`am looking to downgrade my 811s to reader & Kprobes and was thing about getting a NEC but a want SL bit-setting as a stock F/W option so i`am going to follow posts like this for a couple of months and decide then between NEC or Liteon.

I've posted a version of VSC4 on my site, which is a patched version of VS0B. In the packed file is versions for 451S/851S and 812S/832S. Remember that this patch only affects +R burns above 4x.

832S.VSC4.patched-q.rar

If it produces good results, I'll write a patch tool that will work on all 2S firmware or it might be added to OP.

Please post results in this thread. Preferably before and after results.

NOTE: Do not use the OmniPatcher "Force-shift" or "Earlier shift" options on this firmware.

The NEC 3500A firmware was stock firmware and does not support SL bitsetting. Only DL bitsetting is supported, at the moment.

That's great C0deKing but are you suggesting that your 832 couldn't produce that burn on RICOHJPNR01 to begin with?

Great work COdeKing, man you are a Legend,
tell you the truth I can't work out what all the WHO HAAA is about with the NEC 3500A , I been very happy with my LiteOn's and been getting burns just as good as some of the people with there 3500A, so there is no reason to change, another reason I'm staying with Liteon's is because of all the great new Firmware you been making and with the LiteOn I also have SL bitsetting. just downloaded VSC4 and will test it out and post the results

So you slowed the burn down by a minute? It still do not explain why the burns @ 4X and 2X suck...

For those who haven't seen code's disgusting burn that always gives me envy every time I look at it, here it is...

He gets a perfect shift.. Mine looks like it has a hangover.

C0deKing, does this mean that any media that you burn at 8x will use the new burn pattern? Or just the RicohJPN...?

the big ruckus I believe is because it burns well without any added tweaks. after all not all of us can do what you do and others just want to use the drive as is. so I think all the noise is pretty understandable.
BTW nice work.
if only liteon can do what you do, all liteon owners would be alot happier from the start.

@coathi at the moment i think NEC have got the edge at the moment, if i was to get a drive tomorrow it probley be the 2510 and after a couple of months or so i would convert it to 2510@3500 or keep it as it is not realy interested with 16X althought NEC seem to have got the right idea in slowing a 16X burn down to 13X towards the end, i wonder how many people have hardware fastenough to right at 16X.

just want to add this if my 811s had not given me the greaf it has or at least let me burn a desen`t disc with bit-setting then i would not even be considering a nec, my 811s was my first dvd burner and i`ve learned a lot in the last 10 months, espesialy about media and the media at the computer markets i go to seem to favor nec & pionner burners, used to get ricohjpn`s but haven`t had them for months and there not restoking.

I second that @unknown1234, without the code gods and other people on this forum i would not get to burn the media i can and get the results i get.

If anyone from liteon is reading this please pay the code guys to sort your drives out so we are not forst to void our warranty. This might be a bit stronge but its on way of cutting down on rma`s.

just my thoughts and opions at the moment but hey tomorrows another day so come on liteon.

Well they should at least send a few sample drives to code at the very least

Heck If I was a manager at liteon I would hire them and make them do some real work.

Great work! C0deKing
I tried new VSC4 and I got a nice burn.

- LG RICOHJPNR01 burned 8X
- Nero 6.3.1.17
- Burned & scaned with SOWH 812S@832S VSC4

Now the burn is slower.., with VS08 omnipached ("Earlier shift", "force-shifting") the burn take aprox. 8 min. 30 sec. for 4.3GB (4%->6X, 25%->8X), and now with VSC4 it takes 10 min. 10 sec. for 4.3GB (19%->6X, 53%->8X).

Another question..., why the burn is better with "Realtime Chart" enabled?
(previous disc scaned with "Realtime Chart" enabled):

Which is the correct reading?..

Well.., comparing VS08 vs VSC4:
With VS08 (RICOHJPNR01 burned 8X) I obtained different Kprobe results:
- Nice scan:

- Not so nice:

Now I'll try some new burns with VSC4 to see more results..., then I'll decide for VSC4 or VS08.

Thanks C0deKing.

Image 3 & 4 are the same media LG RICOHJPNR01, but different discs.

The image 3 is the best 8X burn , and the image 4 is the worst 8X burn with LG media and VS08 firmware...., normally the 8X burns aren't so good as 3rd one, but neither so bad as 4th one.

@panonoramixx
I suppose it would be more useful to compare a VS0B burn (and not a VS08) with a VSC4 burn because VSC4 is a modded VS0B.
