Sorry, I couldn't test it yet, because I got no DVD-Ram here... I'm going to be in Berlin next week and buy some +DL and -Ram media for testing

Superb thread, thx for the PS01.

Funny question besides: InfoTool still doesn't recognize 8x speed....though I already have PS01 flashed and newest version of Nero.

Does anyone know why (or where to get even newer FW)?

*Update* one DW-R56A user reported that SOSW-852S firmware did not work on his drive. Maybe the eeprom check?

Please see post #45 for the firmware downloads.

I got this new slimline DVD+RW drive from Dell today, because my old LG drive died. I found out that most Sony drives are rebadged Liteon drives, and I guess this one is no exception. I extracted the firmware (QDS1) from it and tried to flash it with Liteon SOSW-852S firmwares (PS01 & PRS7) but the drive stopped responding. So I flashed it back and its all working again. I tried this because I thought I could use the bitsetting utility with the Liteon firmware, but the drive didnt respond after flashing so I couldnt test. I really would like to have bitsetting on this drive because I can only burn DVD+R with it, which my Xbox and dvdplayer dislike. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Looks like you did not use the forum search function. PFS1 should be the right choice http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread....&highlight=852
Send me a PM if it does not work.

Right, the SONY DVD+RW DW-R56A uses a different checksum building. PFS1 needs to be crossflashed to run on this drive.

Probably. LiteOn generally uses a different xor constant with each firmware family ("Q---" vs. "P---").

A user recently flashed a slimline 421S to a 431S, and that required a checksum fix, too. I might as well enable OP's checksum fix for the slimlines since it seems like more people are getting these things.

If you want to add the speed patches, too, the DVD-R table entries are one byte longer to store the speedid inside the table, instead of storing it behind the media table. The speedid coding is as usual.

Thanks for your help! I have succesfully flashed my R56A drive to A D56A Drive.. have tested all but DL burning and all works great!

Attached is a DVD Info Screen. Only problem (even before the flash) was that I could not write at 8X Using Verbatim DVD+R.. So I am assuming it is the Media..

No, that is because there is not a single mediacode allowing 8x burns. Also keep in mind that the drive motor of a notebook drive spinns at only the half rotation speed of a 8x standard drive, so burning takes longer.

i've got a sony DW-R56a (firmware QDS1), which i got with a Dell D600 laptop. It doesn't currently support -R/-RW burns but my understanding is that it is a rebranded LiteOn SOSW-852S which, if i'm reading things correctly, can burn to -R/-RW media.

i've tried patching my drive with some of the 852 LiteOn firmwares but to no avail - the drive refuses to work.

from what i've read above it should be possible to flash the R56A to a D56A which will then support the -R/-RW burns. Can anyone confirm this? and if so is there any chance of mailing the relevent crossflashed firmware over to me??

To flash a R56A to a 852S for dual-format support, you will need to patch a P-series firmware (see dhc014's recent post) for crossflashing.

Normally, this would be done using OmniPatcher, but OP does not support slimline drives yet. I hope to be releasing version 1.3.14b of OP with slimline crossflashing support soon (within 24 hours?), and you can use that to patch a firmware to flash your drive with. Watch the OP thread title for 1.3.14b's release.

(I was originally planning this for 1.3.15, but it seems that the other changes planned for 1.3.15 will take some time, hence the 1.3.14b quickie)
