I did exactly what you did (well one extra step, since I had to change my Verbatim 321240A(L) to an LTR-32123S, which is the same hardware as the Verbatim. That 32X flash worked great)

Then I upgraded to 40X first and then VS02 (48X).
Like you, everything SEEMED fine at max speed.
At 48X, for example, Nero CD Speed showed 37X ave burning speed and I burned 685 MB of data in 2:47 at 48X and even got the "Writing completed successfully at 48X" message in Nero.

BUT then I tried to read the newly-burned CD-R discs in Windows Explorer: they are NOT readable by ANY CD drive!
The same thing that happened with the 48X firmware also happened with the 40X: unreadable discs and strange tray behavior.

I think, like OC-Freak said, you need the 32125W and not the 32123S for this to work PROPERLY...
The chipsets are different enough that something doesn't work.

Now if someone with firmware coding/programming knowledge decided to play around with (i.e. hack) the firmware so it can work with the LiteOn 'S' series...
The CD burned with the o/c LTR32123S (to LTR48125W vs01) were read without any problem or error with the LiteOn LTD 163 DVD drive and the LG 8522 CD-Rom drive.

Does anybody know where to purchase a LTR-32125W online? I've searched around, but haven't been able to find this particular model around. Where have people purchased there's? What about the LTR-40125S or W? Is this drive a little easier to find in some places online?

Well, I thought I bought a 32123S (so printed on the Bill ...), but it was a 32125W. As read in a german newsgroup, all models are now type 'W' instead of 'S' since April '02. So if You find a 'S' offered, it would be a 'W'.

About 4012x: You know about the possibilty to OC slower models? It is said the 32125W ist capable to go up 48x ...

regards

Interesting. Thanks! I'll have to try buying one from newegg and see if it comes as the 32125W.

eek. I still has a whole eleven months product warranty for my 24X, I probably would have 'the courage' to do that after then. It is becoming what it is.

Hi!

I´m new to this board please excuse any mistakes I make. I don´t really know wether this is the right place to post this but here it goes.
I currently own a 32Maxx Memorec cdr and since I thought that lite-on and memorex basically are the sameI thought maybe this cdr could be upgraded too? Any1 know anything about this matter? Also I wanted to know how you can find out what version you have if its a W drive or not? I checked the labels on my memorex drive and it says 1240 something nothing about "W" or so but that´s not so strange since its a memorex. Anyway how do I check which drive I have? BTW its manufactured in march 2002 I think the label said march or april if that helps

Thanks a lot in advance

Use Nero CD-Speed to measure the write transfer rate. insert an empty disc, selct the recorder and push start.

if it writes with Z-CLV tech: S model
if it writes with P-CAV tech: W model

That easy

Hey folks,

Just thought I'd give my input on overclocking the 40125S.
I have an Abit BH6 Mobo, a Celeron 566@850 on a Slotket!!! and a new OS install on a new Seagate Barracuda 80GB HD (quiestest hard drive I've ever heard, honest!). The Lite-ON is dated Feb. 2002 and came with firmware ZS03 if I recall correctly.

Basically, after having tested the different firmwares (all except the latest official ZS0J version - awaiting your input on this!) and burnt over a spindle of Princos doing these tests (Nero, CloneCD and Ghost, verified with CDSpeed and CDR Diagnostic), here are my results:

Most reliable firmware: ZS03/ZS08 (no discernible difference between the two). Causes the least errors on the Princos, but is zone-clv. However, the disk reads fine with very few errors, none uncorrectable.

Fastest firmware: VS01/VS02 (no differences found). Speedy like a bullet but gives tons of errors at high speed on the Princos. Errors appear mostly starting at about 34X or so, consistently. The disks are 16X certified, but are certified to 40X when analysed by smart-burn. Some disks cannot even be tested for transfer speed on CDSpeed (abort error code when it reaches the 36X writing speed location). However, if the disks are burnt at 32X, they are fine and take just something like 15 second more than at 48X, thanks to the high starting speed (22X). One big problem though, in Norton Ghost the disks take much longer to write (at least twice as long in any compression mode) and are unreadable on any testing software, not even in Explorer. Also the recording speed goes up then down and smart-burn kicks in constantly. Very bad. I reverted to ZS0A then down again to ZS08 after the Ghost tests (yes, ZS0A gave erratic performance in Ghost as well).

Not worth the try: ZS0G. Just as bad as VS01 and VS02 in terms of reliability, and not much faster than the Z series Z-CLV firmwares (15 second faster)

So what do I think? I don't know about you, but I can live with burning a few seconds slower as I prefer higher quality results.

Your mileage may and probably will vary. I have not made extensive tests on better quality media and therefore cannot say the problems encountered are hardware related, howver the Pricos won't be burnt reliably at the smartburn accepted speed of 40X with most of the recent firmwares. Basically, my conclusions are similar to cdr-info.com's review of the 48125W (which this drive is updated to using the VS01 or VS02 firmwares).

I may still revert to the higher performance CAV and P-CAV firmware once better media is available, it's still well worth testing IMHO for waht media costs nowadays, and testing doesn't seem to have irreversibly damaged the drive.

One more thing: you hould be aware that flash roms are not meant to be flashed more than 100 times, flashing extensiveley can make them fail. I flashed my drive a total of about 10 times so far.

Are you sure the drive was a 32123S?
I have heard that some people bought the drive and the receipt said LTR-32123S, but the drive was actually a 32125W.

You are the ONLY person who has gotten it to work with the
LTR-32123S....

Everybody else who has tried it gets the tray opening and closing problem and the unreadable discs after OCing the 32123S

I do not think any of those sold by memorex could be overlcocked as they phased out the 16X model before the model that was overlcockable arrived.

It seems that VS04.BIN is the best firmeware for upgrading LTR-40125W. I made several test with VS01.BIN, VS02.BIN and VS04.BIN with NeroCDSpeed and CD check (download from Liteon). VS04 firmeware gives the best speed without error instead of VS01 and VS02.

Well after much thought I have come to the following conclusion:

For all burning on a 40125S except using Norton Ghost, the fastest is using firmware VS01 or VS02, because of the high starting speed. The VS04 is not even worth testing IMHO, it is much slower than the previous firmwares and does not give less errors when the critical speed is reached (around 34X on my Princos).

It is actually slightly faster to burn with VS01 or VS02 at 32X than using the ZS series (Z-CLV) firmwares with speed set at 40X. And there are no visible zones and less errors in the resulting CD than burning at 40X Z-CLV.

This is based on burning almost two spindles of 16X Silver Unbranded Princos just for testing... Glad they cost me only $CDN 20.00 each!

So I would now recommend the VS overclocked firmwares as long as you do not set the speed to high. Be conservative, set the speed slightly lower and you will still burn very fast and avoid end-of-disc errors.

If you want to use Norton Ghost to backup your hard drive and write to CD-R directly, do stick with the ZS03 or ZS08 firmwares. But if you have a large hard drive (like I do now) it might be smarter to write the backup to a file on a second, larger partition in 700MB chunks then burn these to CD using Nero. That gives perfect results.

Just my CDN$0.02...

I bought 2 x 40 speeds, and a 32 speed from Ebuyer.
the 32 speed was a 32123S and date on it was May 2002.
I thought "I wonder if it's just the label , wrong, or something"
Unfortunately, it was a 32123S

Oh well.. still.. nice n cheap - can't complain!

LTR-40125S-->LTR-48125W, possible, mediatek chipset.
LTR-48125W: Not upgradable, mediatek chipset.

If you can just upgrade an LTR-40125S, is there any reason to actually buy the LTR-48125W instead of getting the LTR-40125S and flashing it?

As of today, no. You could even buy the 32125W and upgrade to 48x burner thru firmware.

As for long term consequences, we don't know as yet.

But, as someone said "In the long run, we're all dead"

That's true of burners as well

And with DVD burners expected to much cheaper by the year end, we may not even be looking at buying CD burners soon..............

Especially at the prices burners sell for nowadays, quality of the burn should be much more of an issue for any user than longevity as most will probably outlive their usefulness and probably be retired long before they die.
