411S@811S_EEPROM_REPAIR_TOOL.nfo wrote

411s@811s EEPROM repair tool to improve upgrade: (v4.0)

Included in the package:

* Patcher.exe (for EEPROM modification only)
* FlashFix.exe (for modification of official firmware only)
* LTNFlash (for reading and writing of your EEPROM)
* This .nfo file!

i) Things to be aware of:

This modification technique fixes the MAJOR problems with the other methods. DVD-R (minus or negative) writing @ 2X and 4X is now possible with 411S@811S. It fixes the freeze on lead out issues that were synonymous with the previous modification technique.

It goes without saying, it also fixes 8x & 6x writing, to the best of the current build can accommodate.

An EEPROM is like a drives unique fingerprint – it is fine tuned for any given drive. Putting a real 811S EEPROM right onto your 411S is just plain silly.

This patcher corrects missing 8x and 6x calibration data, missing from the 411S drives.

This EEPROM patcher is also a checksum correction method. Hence, it will allow you to use the REAL Liteon windows flashers

If you patch your EEPROM with this patch, you can go back to a 411S drive at any time via the use of LTNFlash and a .bin of the latest 411S firmware, or even a flashfixed official 411S Windows flasher. LOGICALLY, you MUST put your original EEPROM back on the drive also!

Lots of talk about the “Safe” tool has materialised. While this method if MUCH safer than the previous method of modifications, nothing is totally safe. It is naïve to think that ANY over clock is 100% safe.

As every laser diode is unique, every calibration is so. But it will work for 99% of people. The other 1% - this issue is being worked on

At this time we do not know if ALL DRIVES laser diodes are rated for the needed power at 8x (ca. 30mW). It could potentially be overpowered as it's only 4x rated (ca. 18mW).
We will know one day if the first drives fail permanently. Its unlikely however

UNDERSTAND THIS: IF YOU HAVE A PREVIOUS MOD ON EEPROM - you NEED to use the ORIGINAL EEPROM. Do NOT TRY AND PATCH THIS ONTO AN ALREADY MODDED EEPROM. USE YOUR ORIGINAL.

ii) Instructions

Backup current EEPROM using LTNFlash. Put it somewhere SAFE. Make many copies and put them in places where they will never accidentally be overwritten!

To do this, run LTNFlash, select the 411S, go to the EEPROM tab then hit READ, then SAVE.

Open the patcher (patcher.exe) from the command line. Have a copy of your original EEPROM in the same DIR as the patcher.exe

Run the patch tool on the EEPROM by calling the patcher at command line (Start> Run> cmd (or command in Win98), then typing the name of the original EEPROM, with the file extension, then typing the name of the new EEPROM you wish to create eg:

C:/MyStuff/Patcherv4/

patcher myEEPROM_original.bin myEEPROM_modded.bin

Accept the warnings - if you dare. Be aware of what is being said!

Once finished, run LTNFlash and using the EEPROM tab, LOAD the newly modified EEPROM into LTNFlash then WRITE the new newly modified EEPROM onto your drive.

Download the latest firmware from LiteonIT's home page - at current time of writing, the newest official firmware is HS0P.exe available from the page.

Use the tool FLASHFIX to run on the firmware once downloaded. It is included in the package.
If you have problems understanding flashfix, read its readme file!

Once you have run flashFix on the new OFFICIAL firmware you downloaded from LiteonIT's website run the windows patcher (HS0P.exe for example) and accept the warnings. BE VERY CAREFUL TO FLASH THE RIGHT DRIVE!

Once the drive is finished programming, a forced reboot will occur!

Your EEPROM is now corrected for 8x +R writing. You can now use REAL Liteon firmware's on your drive as they are released!

NOTE: The patcher tool is to be run from the COMMAND LINE in a DOS command window. You CANNOT run it via double clicking! If you do not understand this, please lookup a guide on the lamerweb.

Finally - if you break/hurt/mame/destroy/melt your drive in the process of your tweaking/OCing adventures, DONT be a selfish little twerp! BUY A NEW ONE - DONT WHINGE TO LITEON FOR A REPLACEMENT! YES, BUY A NEW ONE.
The company gives the enthusiast community a great deal of pleasure! The least you can do is be honest and buy a new one if your adventures result in a nuked drive.

iii) GREETZ
Big thanks to the whole beta team and those involved with the creation of this mod. Without you, NONE of this would have come to fruition!

Hi,
After flashed with the 411S@811S_EEPROM_REPAIR_TOOL, do I have to use flashFix on the new Official firmware before I flash it in the future?

I got it. I only need flashfix to flash the same verion or the older version of the firmware.
Thanks

You seem to be confused. FlashFix has nothing to do with the EEPROM checksum.

Ok I must be a idiot because I get to the "OPEN THE PATCHER" from the command line and I'm lost from that point on. I go to RUN & type COMMAND it says to type the name of the original EEPROM then the name of the new EEPROM. What is the new EEPROM name? Is it ZEBRAMOD or Is it the one written in the instruction?>"EEPROM _original.bin myEEPROM_modded.bin"? I feel stupid because I can't get it!

Can someone explain in a more specific way? I would appreciate some help with this. Thanks in advance!

My 411s suddenly failed to write on DVD-R's. I get an "error writing disc" message on several different medias that I had no problem before. After reading several threads about the 411s problem with DVD-Rs, I decided to try the 411s to 811s mod per the instructions I found at www.xs4all.nl...411at811.htm.

After the mod, I am still having the same DVD-R problem. On further research I found this thread which seems to fit my latest problem. I like to try it but have no idea where to download the file….Please show me the url. Many thanks.

Still having problem locating the patcher.exe in this thread. Patcher is used to convert a 411s EEPROM into a 811s EEPROM. Anyone have a copy....I don't seem to be able to locate it or ZedraV4 at Speedlabs?

No, the OmniPatcher is not for 411S@811S!

@psueonline

I pointed you at the post right before yours. If you read it carefully, you will find a link that will direct you to where you can find the patcher!

The Zebra mod files are hard to find because the Speedlabs forum shows a link error message rather than a message telling you you must be a registered and logged in member. So, before you click on the link below, register and login to Speedlabs. Good luck.

I just patched my 411S to 811S - can I use Lite-On's latest firmware for the 811S drive or will I need to modify it?

Nevermind - I went back over the Zebra Mod instructions again and figured it out. Too many things to unzip...

I used flashfix.exe to patch the latest firmware from Lite-On (just so I wouldnt have any problems) flashed the drive, and burned a Verbatim DVD+ 4X at 8x, and a Memorex DVD- at 4x with Nero. Both played perfectly on my Mintek home player

I was having all sorts of trouble with those Memorex DVD-'s before when the drive was a 411S. Great Hack! I wont have to use this drive as a doorstop after all.

Neither the 411S or 811S can burn DVD-R media at 8X. You will need to buy DVD+R media

I've just reconverted my 411S to an 811S mainly because good quality +R media has now come down in price here in AUS. I recommond using RICOHJPNR02 media. Here is a link to a KProbe scan of a disc that I recently burnt @8x using my 411S@811S http://club.cdfreaks.com/showpost.ph...3&postcount=26 . I have scanned it using my 812S because my @811S isn't a good reader and the results look bad with that drive, the disc plays fine with no problems in my standalone player. The results @ 8x are slightly better than a burn done @4x with the same drive and same media http://club.cdfreaks.com/showpost.ph...8&postcount=25 . These RICOHJPNR02 were sold as TDK branded media with blue tops in a 25 disc cake.

I agree with ICEBERG.
My 411 could never write +R at any speed on cheap media.
Once moded to 811 it improved all round. I'm currently getting some very bad batches of cheap -R including INTEGRITY and RITEK G04s, so in frustration tried TDK (RicohjpnR02) and have had 100% success at 8X. Only moan is that they are not printable, although nice pen writing surface.
Kprobe's are variable and do not really improve @4X or 6X; only the bumps move around (possibly as Iceberg says the 411 is not always a good reader)
They are auto bitset to DVD-ROM using omnipatcher and this standard seems to be a big factor in good read compatibility.
The significant point is that they read perfectly in all players, Also, on DVD ROM drives, they read at nearly double the average speed that Ritek G04s read that have excellent Kprobes. NERO CD Speed graphs are smooth everytime. They have superior anti-scratch coating for longevity and, although twice the price of some of the cheapest media, are a bargain that will probably last.TDKs are A$33 for 25 spindle on average
A new media that are about to hit Sydney next week are Infomedia (Taiwan) 8X +R printables and since they have passed Philips 8X standards checks, they could give the TDKs a run for their money because Taiwan is generally a cheaper source. No pricing yet.
