This is my first burn with MS0N firmware.
Taiyo Yuden G02

I scanned it in my other SHM-165P6S,
which hasn't been flashed yet.

A standard Nero ISO DVD burn.
(x6 because the data was on a USB hard drive.)
See comment box on graphic.

The disk is readable in my son's laptop! At last!

CS were totally unhelpful until they e-mailed with a notification
that the new firmware was out. "Match more media"!

I'm fairly new to this whole disc testing thing (never bothered when I was just burning CDs), and I'm still not quite sure how I should be interpreting the results of Nero CD-DVD Speed. This is the first test I've done since I got my SHM-165H6S (first DVD burner I've owned) a few weeks ago. I used the Verbatim 16X +R MCC004; burned some random data at 8X, and scanned the disc at 16X in the same drive.

So can anyone let me know if this is a decent result?

try scanning at 8x, which is the norm.

No it's not a decent result - it's a spectacularly good result!

For future scans you should use 8x scanning speed when posting to this forum, because 8x is the current standard scanning speed for LiteOn 5S and 6S drives here on the forum.

Well, there is a quality rating box... 98.45%, on your graphic.

I recently had a bad 30% burn... three sectors were unreadable.
For a DVD+R DL with an unreadable second layer, the rating was
17%.

There is some great info in the stickies on the top page of
the forum.

There's too much to read all at once, but browsing will help
ease the concepts into your neurons.

You could also look at the many scans in the forum and see
how yours compares.

Errors are almost inevitable, that's why the technology has
built-in error correction. The question is how many errors are
acceptable and what kind of errors are fatal.

Another problem is longevity. Is error density linked with 'data rot'?

I don' t think that any proper research has been published.

Is there somebody working on improving CD-quality?
This is a Verbatim Pastell CD-R written @24x.
Drive is Sony DW-G120A xflashed to SHM-165P6S MV96 connected via USB. This is not what I expect from modern drives and top quality media. For the discs work fine with my other drives, I can exclude a bad batch of media.

^^^ Some of above not great but wondering if unused/unburnt media deteriates? With exception of Fujifilm TY the above has been from tubs that have been periodically used over last 2 years. Might try next disc in tubs with SB and HP on and post at later date.
