| I just discovered my 2 week old 165H6 won't burn a virgin DVD+RW. I tried 3 different brands of DVD+RW and I get the same problem. It will burn a DVD+RW if it has already been written on and it will burn DVD+R, DVD-R and virgin CD-RWs. Could this be bad firmware? I never heard of this problem. When I try CDspeed "Create Disk", CDspeed says "MEDIUM NOT FORMATTED". What kind of disk needs formatting? Maybe the drive thinks the disk is a DVD-ROM. I tried erasing, both quick and full, but it didn't do anything. I'm not surprised because the disk is empty. I noticed on the CDspeed erase box there is a button for format. I don't have a clue what that button is for, but it doesn't work either. I've never installed any packet writing software. This is bizarre. Has anyone with this drive and HS0D firmware tried to burn a blank DVD+RW? I'm thinking I may RMA it, but for all I know, all these drives may have this problem. Maybe this is why they sold it for $33 with free shipping? Actually it's been working pretty well until I ran into this problem. My Liteon 1693 on another computer has no problem burning these discs. I also tried burning with Nero and I will post the Nero burn log next. Last edited by steve b; 22-08-2006 at 06:15. |

| You've got it connected to a Promise SATA controller? |

I connected it that way because my Intel D865gbf motherboard doesn't handle SATA/PATA combinations very well. I could plug the burner directly into the mobo, but I doubt that is the problem. This burner will burn every other type of disc (I haven't tried DVD-RW) and it will burn DVD+RW if the disc has already been written on. Maybe it has something to do with book type, but I don't know anything about book type. I never had to know because it was never a problem before. I guess Nero automatically sets the book type to DVD-ROM, but CDspeed doesn't. If you think it could be the controller, I will plug the burner into the mobo and try it. |

| Apparently the Promise controller was the problem. I connected the burner to an IDE channel on the mobo and now it can burn a virgin DVD+RW. Bizarre. The burner now is DMA mode 2 so it doesn't work very well, but at least I don't have a burner problem. This is the last straw. I WILL replace this stupid motherboard. It has given me a perpetual skin rash since I installed it two years ago. All because the BIOS can't see two SATA drives and one IDE burner at the same time. Incredible. |

| If you use 80-wire ribbon cable on the IDE channel, it should work in UDMA Mode 4. Make sure to check out all PATA & SATA settings per manual in your BIOS to try and solve that issue. |

| Thanks for your help. I finally found a solution that doesn't involve throwing this mobo into the dumpster. (but I might do it anyway ) The cable isn't the problem, it's 80 conductor. The problem is the stupid buggy BIOS on the motherboard.By the way, as you probably knew, the Promise controller was designed for hard drives only. I did some research and the FAQ says it won't handle optical drives. Actually I believe it did okay except for the above problem with burning a virgin DVD+RW. So I put my burner back on the mobo IDE channel. I don't think anyone believes this but this Intel mobo BIOS can't see two SATA drives and one IDE device at the same time. I find it almost incredible and probably nobody else believes me, but it's true. As of a year ago there were 26 BIOS updates for this thing, but none of them addressed this problem. The BIOS has a bunch of settings for PATA/SATA that claim to do whatever I want, but they don't work as advertised. I've tried every possible combination of options but they just don't work right. There's "enhanced" mode and there's "legacy" mode. In one of them, it's supposed to see everything. In the other it says I have a choice of both SATAs and either one of the IDE channels. But it just plain doesn't work that way. First of all, if I put anything on the master IDE channel, the BIOS can't see any SATA device, no matter what options I choose. If I put the burner on the secondary IDE channel, I can configure the BIOS so it sees either the first SATA and the burner, or both SATAs but not the burner. This isn't what the BIOS says these options do, but it's how it actually works. If I use the latter one I can boot an OS on either hard drive, but I can't boot from optical drive. That's okay, but when XP runs, it can see the optical, but sets it up with DMA 2. Only when the BIOS sees the optical drive does XP set the burner with DMA 4. But when the BIOS can see the optical drive, it doesn't see the second SATA which precludes me from booting from the second SATA. Yes it's true folks, I spent hours testing it. Well today I did find a solution. I plugged my second SATA hard drive into the Promise controller. Then I configured the stupid BIOS so it sees my first SATA drive and my burner. Now everything works. The burner is plugged into my mobo, and the BIOS sees it, so it runs DMA 4. The BIOS sees my first hard drive so it boots okay. I can even load and run an OS that's on the second hard drive. It took me 2 years of agony and a Promise controller, but now my computer works like a computer should. I even got a bonus. The second hard drive is now running DMA mode 7, at least that's what the Promise controller says. And it's now hot swappable. I get the "safe to remove" icon in the system tray.
