| I Have tried every thing I can think of to get this thing to burn a set-top playable movie. Three brands of media (TYG02, MXLRG03, SONY08D1) and all are some of the best burns I have ever seen. I used Nero and DVDD to burn with, Put it in Two different computers, and even sent it back to Newegg for a new one. I have tried to play them on Two set-top players and a PS2 with no luck. NO DISK or THIS TYPE OF DISK IS NOT PLAYABLE. Plug my 811s back in and every thing is fine. There is one thing I did notice and that is the burn starts much farther out from center on the 1635s than on the 811s. A good 16th of an inch farther out. Anybody else having this problem. By the way cdfreaks.com is one of the best communities out there! Thanks SHW-1635s - YSOV JLMS-HD166s P4- 2.8 Intel 865PE 2-WD 80 GB 9800 Pro |

| Yes i am having same trouble with my 1635S, i have upgraded it to the latest firmware YSOV and still no difference.I find my xbox backups wont work and movies in my standard dvd player wont read towards the end of the disk with this burner. I have been using princo and ritek media and all worked flawlessly on my old lite-on 1633 but not this new burner. I have also noticeb the when burning, the burn does start a lot further out from the collar of the disk than normal. Would this be a firmware issue for particular brand disks, because it does with ritek and princo but i had no other brand discs to check. Maybe the reason why my xbox backups wont boot anymore.

| Can you confirm the burning starts more outside on the disk ? We already had this bug with early 411 firmwares...

| I can confirm just by looking at the disk that it starts burning about a 16th of an inch farther out. A good burn from my 811s starts burning much closer to center. This is with TYG02, MXLRG03, and SONY08D1 media. You say this has been a problem before? How was it fixed? I am just about to send this thing back again and jump ship to a NEC or BENQ if this can't be solved. Thanks for your help. |

| With the 411 drive a firmware upgrade fixed the problem. To be sure someone else should confirm your observation with a different drive.

| Here are two picts one of the RitekG05 burnt with a lite-on 1635S and also one burnt with the lite-on 1633S. You can notice the difference where the burn starts from the collar., if this helps any.

| Have you tried to set +R booktype to DVD-ROM? Maybe +R's will play that way. |

| Well I tried DVD+R (CMC MAGM01) not great media but scans show that it should be more than playable. Plays on one Set-top and just freezes at about the Third chapter no matter how I burn it Book-Type or not, Nero or DVDD. My guess is there is a bad batch of 1635s out there and I just happen to get Two in a row. Funny thing is it will burn a playable movie on DVD+RW (CMC MAGW01) but only works on One of my set-top players Book-Type or not. I have built my famillies computers for the last 5 years and never had such a problem (bad Ram a couple of times but easy to test and fix). I have always used Liteon-Sony products and been very happy with there performance. This problem has really shaken my confidence in Liteon products. I have been trying to contact them, I get nothing but genaric canned responces and now nothing at all. My dilemma is do I try One more time at $8.00 shipping or just switch brands at an added cost of %15 restocking fee. Not to mention about $20.00 worth of coasters. I guess I have been lucky so far and it was bound to happen eventuality when you build your own computers. Any way thanks for your time and great site I will continue to visit. Jeff |

| I have had problems also with 2 1635s drives, after I returned the 2nd one I went to a 1693s instead. I also thought that there might be a bad batch of 1635s and thats why I switched to a 1693s. Fortunately for me I bought my 1635s's locally and did not have to bother with any RMA stuff but the manager at Officemax would of freaked out if I had returned another 1635s. Good Luck, Budzos

| I never had any probs with my 1635, especially using YS0V. It burns DVD-/+R with average quality scores of 93 to 96 in Nero CD/DVD Speed, and they read fine both on my PC and on my H&B 3255 MPEG4 player. Must be a bad batch. It sucks I know, my brand new BenQ DW1655 is on RMA at the moment, its scans were really erratic, so it had to go back.

| Same exact problem with my SHW-1635s. My old 811s worked fine (at least most of the time) - just got rid of it though. Using my NEC for all burning until this is fixed...By the way: comparing media from either my NEC or old 811s shows the same start-of-burn that is closer to the center than that of the 1635S. This is with RITEKG05 media, I don't have any / rarely use +R, +-RW, or +-R DL to test with. This seems to only be affecting -R media right now, correct? Can anyone verify? | DVD+Rs seem to start burnning in the right spot but still would not play, just freeze up. The scans were not great but should have played just fine. Definitely a problem with the 1635s. Just RMAd my Second one to try a Third and final one. Will be looking at a NEC next. Sure a sad day for LITEON to be dumping this junk on the market! Oh well live and learn. Jeff |

| I also have a 1635s and tonight I discovered that the glitch in the firmware is there when recording DVD-R. I have had previous LiteOn recorders, and I compared the discs to ones I have burned with it to ones I have recorded with my 1635s and the ones on my 1635s are farther out. This causes problems in my Xbox when I go to play backups. I can play a game on DVD-R burned with my older burner, but with my 1635s you can hear the laser kind of "screech" as it trys to find where the beginning of the disc should be, as in the disc burned by my old recorder. Any suggestions on a cross-flash or something so I can record backups and be able to use them again on my Xbox? And since i just got this recorder as it being the best by liteon at the time of purchase, i dont have the cash to get another recorder at the moment. |

| Hmm. I just bought a rebadged 1635 and it works great... With newest firmware, I test burned a dvd movie. Media was a 4x speed MCC DVD-R. I burned at 4x with 95% quality read from Nero. The DVD movie plays perfect on V4 PS2, which is one of the pickiest I know for DVD movie playing. I have a Toshiba set top I'll try playing it on later tonight. Maybe you guys just got a bad batch T.T |
