Have you tried the self-diagnostics test? This way you can check if your drive is the problem or your system. How to run the self test can be found in your manual or here. What I find strange in your Nero log is that it doesn't detect your drive's UDMA mode. But, maybe this has something to do with Windows 98 (it's been a while since I last used this operating system ).

Just thought of this one: have you installed the Intel Application Accelerator drivers?

I agree with GameFreak as it looks like the Intel IDE drivers are getting in the way, uninstall them & use the basic windows default ones

try to disable or remove any emulation software (i.e. alcohol 120%, cloneCD, etc.) if you have it/them installed.

I did the self-diagnostic test and it was fine and uninstall the Intel Application Accelerator. Checked dma under drive properties and just burned a cd at 48 speed without a problem!
