PX-716A read cd but not dvd

Hello all,

I have a problem with my brand new PX-716A, if I insert a cd it reads it just fine, if I insert a dvd it doesn't recognise it. Also, I updated firmware from 1.08 to 1.09 for the same result. I havent even tried to burn anything yet :/

Any idea?

If you're using a motherboard with an nVidia chipset and when you're using the nVidia IDE drivers please remove them and use the standard Microsoft drivers instead! The best way to remove nVidia IDE drivers is through the Control Panel » Add and Remove Programs » nVidia Drivers » Click change/remove » Uncheck IDE drivers only » restart. The drivers should now roll back to the default Microsoft drivers

... I uninstalled my nVidia IDE drive, rebooted and let the default microsoft driver install. But the PX-716A still can't read DVD. Also i get 2 Amber blinks with DVD (Auto adjustment failed, Cannot read a stamped disc or initialize a CD-R/RW disc because the drive cannot properly configure the focus and track adjustment settings)

I was reading on another post that bad raid driver could be the problem?
I have seen also a post where the problem was reverse (PX-716A could read dvd but not cd) I'm very confused on what to do.

Encor, Welcome to the forum.

Firstly, you ARE using the standard Microsoft IDE drivers, shown in your attachment in post #1 picture #1 (Driver Provider: Microsoft, Driver Date: 01/07/2001 etc). So that explained why your troubleshooting in post #2 has no effect.

Second, please do the Self Diagnostic Test as explained in your Plextor manual page 92 or here: http://www.plextor.com/english/support/faqs/HW00008.htm. Make sure you insert a recommended DVD, not CD, since you said you are having trouble with reading DVDs. If the test failed then you need to contact Plextor for RMA.

Lastly, your drive is a PX-716SA (the SATA version).

yep. thats what i would suggest - Run a self diagnostic test. There is no point of going through..unnecessary hassles.

Cuz, if the test fails. U simply take the drive and RMA it.

Your right, the plextor driver didn't change during my first test, but it still did something as it removed nVidia IDE drivers off my system.

Also, I just tried the diagnostic test without any result. I did the test following the SA manual, but I'm getting the 3 amber blinks result with a few blank DVD-Rs. I'm not going to buy more DVD to try the test over and over. I'll just return it to plextor i guess?

When you put your blank DVD in your Plextor, can you check the media code in Plextools - CD/DVD Info. I know you said it won't recognize your DVD, but worth a try.

What brand is your blank DVD, and made in where (Japan, Taiwan, etc). You need a recommended media to run the Self Diagnostic Test such as Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden.

I noticed that it shows in pic 2 that it is connected to a SATA port, is this a PX716SA or a PX716A on a converter board.

If it is a PX716SA then there have been alot of reports of problems with nVidia SATA controllers. A few have been fixed by using the NEWEST nVidia SATA drivers. However I dont know if one of the problems was to do with DVD read problems.

If you have done the self test with a DVD on the reccomended list then I think you will be looking at an RMA

Personally I dont like SATA for ATAPI devices, it just seems to cause to many problems at present. I would stick with IDE for DVD or CD readers / writers and SATA for HDD's.

you need to RMA the drive, here is chart for the blink codes http://www.plextor.com/english/suppo...6A-SAandUF.htm just tell them when you contact them how many blinks and what color and they will issue a RMA for you
