P.S.---I took a new Verbatim, from the box, close Plextools, and turn it on again, with the media inside....

This time Plextools, recognised, the media as capable of make a record at 16x! ufffff
It seems when a record the DVD, i turn On Plextools and put the DVD on the Plextor, all same time, creating some kind of conflict...or disabling PR at same time inserting the DVD on the unity..........but now it`s ok!!

I will try later, a record at 16x! Well observed, Tom Roper
It`s a 12x record and not 16x!!
I`m gonna buy those!

2. Also I noted On your Plextor 716 rating your rating of Criteria #8 "Drive look and feel and general drive usage" was 7/10 based on an examination of the inner components rnecessitating the removal of the Plextor Case. Have you had the opportunity to do this same inspection with the BenQ as well.
3. I know you have not had access to a LG 4163, per our last post, do you intend to in the future. I respect yopur opinion and will await yor review if it will be forthcoming.
4. I am rapidly running out of time to return my unboxed Plextor and am concerned about quality writes for the long term preservation of various material (most is irreplaceable if the disk cannot be read) , so in your opinion should I switch to the BenQ 1620, LG 4163 or stick it out with the Plextor.

Thanks again for your many valuable contributions
1: well, I think it may get 8/10 now, mostly due to the added 6x DL writing and finally supporting 8x DVD+RW. Still do not support much media overspeeding and writing quality at 16x could be even better.
2: It's based on the fact that my Plextor had a defect which was caused by poor contruction. My BenQ did not have any defects - so I've not had the need to look for poor contructions yet
3: I'm working on a LG GSA-5163D review, so I do have experience with later LG models.
4: The plex is good as long as you avoid 16x DVD-Writing. but if 16x DVD-Writing is your goal, then LG and BenQ may be worth a look. The LG is damn fast at 16x too - but requires 16x media to write at 16x

hehe Tom..i hear ya man ...thanks for your added contributions...those are good looking burns as usual (though i don't like the PIFs of 3 in that first sum1 scan).

OC-Freak, i definitely trust and respect your reviews and opinions, but it seems you're one of the few that's having issues with YUDEN000 T02. i know Zevia, Tom, Two Degrees, KenW, myself and a number of others, don't have the POF issues you do with this MID and actually get very good results with it (as illustrated by a number of scans already posted in this thread and other threads).

i'll be posting some scans this evening...

There's a lot of variability with YUDEN000T02 it seems. I have discs from three different batches and the quality is different for each one.

I've haven't had a single POF from a Plextor burn on any brand or media ID, with either unit...so far.

Here's my latest 16x burn. The only thing different, I switched on PR. I love what it does.

PX-716UF/USB2.0
TLA0101/FW V1.04
PR="ON"
AS="ON"
Media Brand: Fuji 8x DVD+R
Media ID: YUDEN000T02
Burned at 16x

Out of this batch, they are all turning out like this. I think what we are testing is media, not drives.

Also make sure that you have latest drivers for your mainboard and servicepacks for you OS.
Ok, has resolved.
I have raised the master from the box USB2 and I have put him inside the PC.
The speed of reading now reaches 12 X.
Thanks thousand!!!!!!

I see in the tests above that almost all use the AutoStrategy ON; 712 does not have such a feature and give better results, so for 716 wouldn't be better to turn AutoStrategy off? I admit PowerRec can provide better burns, but autostrategy is realy worth to be used on quality media such MCC, TY and so?

Here are my PX-716A scans I made of (Ritek G05) Ridata 8x DVD-R burned at 8x using Plextools 2.19A and Firmware 1.04. Looks to me like 1.04 has done some wonders! I also upgraded to nero 6.6.0.5, which may have made a difference as well. As you can see below, my jitter scans are looking MUCH better with 1.04. I am very happy with this scan.

For PIPO Test
Pie Avg: .74
Pie Max: 57
POF: 0
Pie Total: 105,139

For Jitter Test
Drive Info ID:0 PLEXTOR DVDR PX-716A V1.04 (#246528)
Test Settings Tested Zone: Inner Disc Zone On Layer 0
Test Result Disc Info: WICKER_PARK DVD-R, 4465 MB (WICKER_PARK) RITEKG05
Jitter:* * * * *(5)
Peak Shift: * * * *(4)
The recorded quality of this disc is: Very Good

ya just gotta love a burner that can overburn a +R SL disc to nearly 4600MB and result in these scans.

PX716A, TLA0101, FW1.04, FUJIFILM 8X DVD+R (YUDEN000 T02)
Burned with NERO 6.6.0.6 @ 16X with PR ON & AS ON
Burn Time: 7:03 (PR kicked it down to 8X near the end).

That's a Great Burn! Amazing.

Here is a burn I made of FujiFilm 8X DVD-R [Taiwan], Media ID: ProdiskF01
This disk was burned at 8x using Nero 6.6.0.5
Unfortunately, I made the mistake of choosing a test movie that was less than 4.4 gigs. But hopefully, you can get an idea of how this media burns from these scans.

Q-Check PI/PO Test
Drive Info ID:0 PLEXTOR DVDR PX-716A V1.04
Test Settings Read Speed: 2X CLV
Test Interval Length: High Accuracy
Test Result Disc Info: THE_AVENGERS DVD-R, 3167 MB (THE_AVENGERS)
ProdiscF01

PIE Avg: 1.64
PIE Max: 43
Total: 166727
POF: 0

Test Duration 0:20:01

Q-Check TA Test
Drive Info: ID:0 PLEXTOR DVDR PX-716A V1.04
Test Settings: Tested Zone: Inner Disc Zone On Layer 0
Test Result: Disc Info: THE_AVENGERS DVD-R, 3167 MB (THE_AVENGERS) ProdiscF01
Jitter: * * * * (4)
Peak Shift: * * * * * (5)
The recorded quality of this disc is: Very Good

thanks ImBAD. hey, IMHO, i think you should ditch the TA test and run sum1 tests instead. PIF is a very important indicator of the burn quality. just my 2 cents though.

Interesting burns...

- drpino's overburn and very excellent SUM1's
- bladeede's links look like more linear beta/jitter
- ImBAD's Ritek G05's
