That seems to be the case, I remember that only early LiteOn DVD writers (like my dead 18A1H) could use that CDSpeed test.

I returned the enclosure because it had several other faults.
Yes it does, I actually have most of the drives in my signature in them and have no problems with the JMicron chipset. I could get 16x burning on Windows but only 8-12x under Mac OS X, which is acceptable since that is my preferred speed. eSATA enclosures handle the high-speed burning and scanning/ripping.

Yellow disc. All my yellows (relatively) suck in this spindle. (You'll soon see why). As common with my other 4x 0.8 GigaRec burns with this Premium, any BenQ drive fails to run a quality scan on it.

Another yellow disc. The contents of this disc and the burn settings are the same as the previous post, but only done at 8x. This change in speed changes one thing however; I can now magically scan with a Nexperia drive. Mind-boggling.

Now here's the funny part - this is another green disc (same as this one). These blues are puzzling, no complaints with them though.

Here's an orange disc. Nothing spectacular.

The last color of the spindle, pink, is close to the green in terms of quality... but still not as good enough.

I still don't get jitter with it That's why I use the BenQ for this. I could also scan and burn simultaneously (VMWare Fusion = ODC, OS X 10.5.7 = Toast)

Had to join in the fun. How? By getting a Premium

Here's a 62-minute audio CD burned with Gigarec at 0.8x [approx. 63 min. with an 80 min. CD-R).

Burner: Plextor Premium-U (1.07) TLA#0005 (MIC)
Sold as: Taiyo Yuden 700 MB 100-pk. spindle from 2003 or older
MID: Taiyo Yuden (type 1) 97m24s01f (I think)
Burned using: PlexTools Pro XL 3.16
Burned at: 8x
PoweRec: Off (I'm 90% certain)
GigaRec: 0.8x
VariRec: Off

Do you like what you see?

As a point of reference, I pulled out my old Dell XPS T500 equipped with a Sony CRX100E 4x CD burner to do some testing, since koba convinced me that older media would do much better on older drives than something like the PremiumII which apparently is only optimized for TY 48x. Going by this burn, a TDK MIJ 650MB disc, the Premium/Premium II drives seem to do just fine.

I got in 40 jewel-cased Maxell printable CD-Rs, made in Japan by Hitachi Maxell from eBay today. I wanted to try a burn at the rated speed first with the Premium II; the results are okay but not as good as my MIJ TDKs.

Now for a GigaRec burn On the first try, PlexTools hung at the lead-in stage. Turned off PoweRec, the second try went well.

Burner: Premium II TLA #0303
Firmware: 1.03
Media: TDK 700MB white printable (made by Taiyo Yuden)
Burn Speed: 8x
PowerRec: Off
VariRec: Off
GigaRec: 0.6x
AMQR: Off
Burning Software: PlexTools Pro XL 3.16

Yes!

Both these discs are for a friend's car with an ancient CD player. It usually cannot handle CD-Rs, but two Taiyo Yuden GigaRec 0.7x and 0.8x burns made with my Premium [mk. 1] play back flawlessly, with no skips even when riding hard over speed bumps and potholes.

Let's see how these fare.
