Readback of pressed video-DVD

FW 1.05 raises the read-speed to 6-16x CAV for pressed video-DVDs. However read-speed for burned DL-DVDs remains at 3-8x CAV (they should have raised that one to 5-12x!).

Good burn. The writing strategy seems slightly differend at the beginning. Otherwise the result ist very much the same. Slightly less overall PIE than with FW 1.04. TA-Test says: good 4/3, not good 4/2, good 4/3. B/J-Scan in the PX-760 stopped with an error around the .5GB mark (for no apparent problem?) so i scanned in the PX-716.

Good burn except for a single PIF-spike of 5. TA-Test says: good 5/3, good 5/3, good 5/3. No readback problems in the 716.

Mini summary for 18x speed with FW 1.05

Overall error levels are pretty much the same than with earlier FW. However with FW 1.05 it is for the first time that all media written at 18x are read back in the 716 without any speed drops. With earlier FWs at least one of my three 18x capable media showed speed drops of some kind. If one really wants to use 18x it looks that Yuden -R is the best choice.

TA-Test says very good across the disc 5/4. No readback speed-drops in the 716. PoweRec slowed down this burn a bit to late and some PIF-spikes beyond 4 are the result. Looks like these media a best burned @12x. B/J scan in the 760 aborted with an error, so the scan was done in the PX-716.

Compared to a 10x burn with FW 1.04: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showpost.ph...1&postcount=60 it seems that at least 8x speed now gives usable results (see second layer) or at least the drive knows when to slow down/speed up in time. Up to FW 1.04 8x and especially 10x speeds could look pretty bad.

TA-Test says good (4/3), very good (4/4), good (4/3); very good (4/4), good (4/3), good (4/3).

Very good burn as far as PIE/PIFgoes. Some rather big POE spikes at the beginning (>300). TA-Test says good 3/3, good 3/3, good 3/4.

Plextors recommended media list says these 48x certified media can be written at a maximum of 32x only.

11278 total C1 errors. A lot more C1 errors. Beta/Jitter looks much the same, Jitter perhaps a bit more regular.

Preface: I did a first burn of such a disc at 48x speed (Audio content). Given that the FE/TE-Test showed a good result in the PX-760 (http://club.cdfreaks.com/showpost.ph...9&postcount=70) this seemed possible, but perhaps questionable. The resulting disc was barely recognizable in the PX-760. However it was recognized and playable in a Premium2 and a Yamaha stereo exept for the last track (some minor problems before that last track). I then did another burn at 16x speed. The resulting disc turned out to be a lot better (playable) except for some fatal errors at the very end.

Also there seems to be some problem with C1/2/U-scanning on 99min media in the PX-760. At least the resulting scan looks funny.

1. Scan in the PX-760: 6086 total C1 errors.
2. Scan in the Premium 2: 36562 total C1 errors, 32 C2 errors and 4 CU errors.

Plextors recommended/compatible media list for the PX-760 only lists Verbatim and Ricoh for +R DL media (both 2.4x and 8x). A first burn failed (drive failed to recognize the disc afterward). You can see the results of a second try below. The burn produced uncorrectable errors (POE) at the end of the disc.

Every once in a while Plextor pampers it's customers by releasing addidional functionality by Firmware-Update. They did this back with the PX-716, which was announced to support +RDL at 4x speed and then was updated to 6x +RDL and -RDL support.

Now Plextor does so again with the PX-760 which was announced to write -RDL at 6x speed. FW 1.05 raises this to 8x speed. In contrast to +RDL P-CAV writing, the 8x speed for -RDL has been implemented as 6-8x Z-CLV.

TA-Test says Excellent (5/5), Excellent (5/5), Very Good (5/4); Excellent (5/5), Very Good (5/4), Excellent (5/5).
