Already checked it and found the bootcodes of both drives to be different. While the Optiarc drives have a 0.06 bootcode from July 6th, the Plextor drives have bootcode version 0.08 from October 27th.
I guess this means that running Optiarc firmwares on Plextor drives won't work, just like running Plextor firmwares on Optiarc drives. Let's hope that Optiarc at least fixed the UDMA flashing bug in their 0.08 bootcode.

Liggy will the crossflash work on all 717x drive's or only the 7170? and if so, will someone be able to go back to the orginal 7173?

I would not release a bootcode flasher that converts 7170<->7173. While it should be easy to go back, I don't think I'll release such a bootcode flasher at all. It is likely to cause more trouble than it could help. I can already think of all the people complaining, because a specific firmware on their drive is not able to burn any discs or something like that.

Filesizes of the compressed files don't differ much, so I guess nothing much was changed.

The decision has not been made yet, but I guess that's what it will finally be. But if we find out that regular Optiarc firmwares also work fine with the 0.08 bootcode (but I doubt it will), an update software might be made available. However this will probably mean that the original Optiarc firmware update software will refuse flashing the drives then and I don't want their support have to deal with these issues.

Before you go on with the great crossflashing discussion:

Borrowing Pulsee's words , is it also safe to say then, that this drive burns exactly like the Optiarc and that there won't be any reviews because it's senseless? If drive and firmware are the same, could there be still any surprises or are we through with hoping?

And people who own the drive: Does at least the "unreliable" scanning usual for the Optiarcs work with PlexToools LE or are the functions locked/gray? If it does work, is there any different behavior in terms of how it reports things?

I'd say yes.

According to YSS findings the Media-List in the firmware is identical:

So it'd be my guess that Plextor didn't touch the strategies either. Given that Plextor has found the development of own drives to have become unprofitable, i hardly expect extensive modding of third party drives to be profitable in comparison. I'd be surprised if any modification went beyong branding (and minor adjustment for, say, (limited) Plextools interoperability).

It's Only Cosmetic But I Would Of Liked The Plextor PX-800A To Be A Lot Different Than The (Old) NEC AD-1770A.

I fully agree! The 'cosmetics' actually is something I care about, because most OEM (NEC/Optiarc) ODD's tend to look like crap

What is the point of spending lots of cash on a great looking (desktop) case being spoiled by the drive's bezel. For this reason I now have 2 PX760's which look great!

Well, that's sad . But the world will go on somehow . I will buy a dvr-112 plus the 20x LiteOn for scanning, should my 755 die some day in the future.

The 760A will not work with Windows Vista. I have one and per Windows MSDN Support and Plextor Engineering it is not compatable. The 800A is. I replaced by 760A with a 800A and all the Vista DVD functionality works perfectly. Persons who favor the 760A over the 800A are not Vista users. The 760A was engineered with a Vista prototype but it does not work with the production version.

Hm...the PX-800A or Optiarc 7170A is a very bad burner.
The CDRInfo-Test says this burner are bad.

They did .

I bought the drive yesterday and flashed you RPC-1 firmware in windows normal mode and everything went fine. I'm very dissapointed though with Plextor and their decision to go on rebadging and I think this might be the last Plextor drive that I own unless the company get's really serious again. I don't have a problem paying more for a drive that is better than the other's but I do have a problem buying just a rebadge for twice+ the price.

I wanted to get a 760A or a Benq 1655 but you can't find any of those here in Greece. The PX-755A (also a rebadge of the Benq) that I could find only came in bulk beige colour (everything is black in my case) so I was stuck in a situation where I couldn't find a decent scan drive with good error correction.

Ahhhh! The old days of Plextor being the best have been well gone...

The 755A isn't a rebadge, but a real Plextor
(The 750A - also still around - is a TEAC rebadge.)

Now I wonder: can this drive be flashed with OptiArc firmware? I see some contradicting posts here, but see some firmware on this page:

You can only flash with other PX-800A firmwares or the 1.N7/1.N8 firmwares. The other firmwares rely on a different bootcode and will not work with your drive.
