Plextor Writer Discuss, Plextor launches a new internal DVD-ReWriter drive - the PX-800A at CD and DVD Writers forum; Did anyone else notice that Plextor USA is actually listing the PX-800A as a "Premium" drive like the 755/760: http://www.plextor.com/english/produ...rw_drives.html I kind of doubt it'll have all the extra features of the 755/760-Series but maybe this is an indication that at least scanning will work? Well, that means something good or something very bad. Having said that, it now officially has to mean that it can scan!

A very interesting finding.

I'm both at the same time now. I'm doubtful, but have a feeling as well. Let's hope. It would be cool.

Well I think that I will have to dissappoint some of you....Plextor Japan will not bundle Plextools with the PX-800A. Plextor Japan in the past bundled Plextools only with drives that where able to scan.... Going after this there wont be scaning with PX-800A....

In the recommended media list there is no MCC DVD+R entry. This could (could!) mean that Plextor hasn't even change the firmware, since NEC doesn't recommend MCC DVD+Rs either. I know that Plextor is very much with TY, but what kind of a Plextor one be, that can't burn MCC DVD+Rs with the excellent quality, typical for Plextor recommended discs...

Alternate.de now has pictures of the box and more natural pictures of the drive. It's in stock now as well. Price is €69,- there. I can't see any difference to the NEC.

Also: Plextor launched a video A/D converter product called PX-AV200U.

Yes, we will.

Or maybe we won't: As I posted recently, according to traditional NEC recommendations NECs don't like MCC DVD+Rs. And the PX-800A doesn't like them either according to the Plextor recommendations. It's possible that Plextor hasn't even change the firmware.

I believe Plextor might release a DVD Premium burner once Blu-ray is becoming more widespread and the DVD burner market stagnates.

Just re-release the PX-716A with an upgraded Autostrategy. Nothing else is required. We don't need PIF spikes.

I just got a Px-800a because my Px-716a broke (it can't read cds anymore ) .
I hope that Plextor won't disappoint me with this drive.

The drive was manufactured in March 2007 in Malaysia.

I hope to find some time to report you more, but unfortunately i have to work until 23:00 and i'm moving to another flat. I'm very busy

But couldn't a bit-to-bit comparison with the few NEC-Optiarc firmware versions reveal whether further "investigation" makes sense at all. If it matches with one of them nothing more can be made of it than you can make of the NEC firmware. We could then know much faster if it is the NEC firmware or a new, Plextor one. I'm sure most members don't need this help, but CDCheck is a great software for bit-to-bit comparisons of the .bin-files. To do this is useless of course if Binflash adds only a single bit to the firmware it extracts.

The Plextor and Opriarc firmwares can't be bit-identical, even if they are the same. One drives reports itself to the system as Plextor and second as Optiarc, so at least that string will be always different.

I don't know why they quit making the 760! It is an excellent drive. Way better then anything else I came across made by other companies!

On the other hand, my little brother still uses my "Plextor premium" 52x cd-only drive from 7 or 8 years ago that still burns cd's faster than you could believe, and scans just as well as the day i bought it.

I would vote for the premium as the best drive plextor ever made. Their newer drives have proven to be very unreliable mechanically in my recent experience. I hate to admit it, but plextor was definitely headed down-hill for a while........ They probably had no choice but to stop making their own drives.

Original and RPC1 patched PX-800A Firmware 1.00 uploaded. It can be flashed like every other NEC and Optiarc firmware with Binflash. But you will probably have to activate PIO mode for a successful flash.

I flashed my Optiarc AD-7170A with this firmware to try it.
The drive supports full bitsetting out of the box.
