In my Windows XP Professional SP1a system, the Plextor PX-708A (Serial # 505884369612) will not read any CD's or DVD's. Each time I try, Windows crashes with a blue screen!
This was before and after I just (apparently successfully) flashed the latest firmware, ver. 1.06. Previously I had been using 1.04 and still it would not read CD's or DVD's. I'm pretty sure the drive could read both CD's and DVD's at some point earlier, so I suspect a software problem.
Windows Device Manager lists this device as "PLEXTOR DVDR PX-708A SCSI CdRom Device". The "SCSI" there sounds suspicious to me! (Or does the drive, in fact, use an ASPI layer?)
I have also from time to time had Windows error messages that DLA could not load (even though I didn't have any disk in either the PX-708A or my other Plextor drive, Plexwrite Premium.
Below is all the diagnostic information reported by PlexTools Professional V2.11. The drive in question is indicated by my marking with *** below.
Note that I have this drive connected via an Abit "Serillel" IDE-to-SATA connector to an on-board SATA channel. I'd suspect this hardware aspect except that, as I said, the drive had earlier been able to read CD's and DVD's, and that the drive seems to be found and its firmware could be flashed.
