Hi,

got aproblem with my new DVD rewriter - Plextor 708A. Maybe you have some ideas or are experiencing the same. I have bought the European model yesterday. I am using the burning software that was in the package of this retail version. There are 2 mainproblems:

1) I can only select 2x speed ... nothing more

2) I can only burn every 3rd DVD, because Nero hangs up 2 times in a row, and then suddenly it works. But then it takes me 28 minutes ...

I am using Intenso media ... they were cheap, and there is no information about the speed limit on the media package ...

Would be nice if I could get some help!

thx

*update*:

Nero hang up the 3rd time in a row ... can't burn any DVD. Have always to restart my system completely.

AMD Athlon XP 1600+
512MB

uaahhh, really need some help ...

Hi ninjin, welcome to our forum!

Which firmware are you using for your PX-708A drive? It's recommended to upgrade to the latest version (1.02) to improve the drive's media compatibility. You already say that you're using cheap media and that's probably why it's either not completely supported by the Plextor drive or it can only be burned at 2x (it is DVD-R media?). A 28 minute burn for writing at 2x sound normal to me. I think it would be best if you try some other DVD+R media. There are several threads on the forum where people report their experiences with DVDR media.

I don't know if your problem with Nero is also related to the media you're using. What do you mean with Nero hangs?

about the speed..i think that the media speed limit is 2X.

i bought some TDK DVD-R discs and i could burn to them only @ 2X

they had nothing about the speed limit. so i believe that yours can be written only @ 2X.

about this hanging thing, try to use the latest version of nero. Nero 6.0.0.19

If media DO NOT say about speeds on their outer package, then it's always first generation DVD+/-Rs. (1x).
Otherwise, they would advertise it with big letters!
All 2x-4x speed blank media, say it at loud!
So if you use discs with no indication on them, they are only recorded in 1x!
It's so simple!
Of course there are some burners that can actually burn these media also in higher speeds - and most of the times do so!
But don't question why you don't get higher speed options if you DO NOT BUY high speed media!
It is quile logical! Isn't it?
Try TDK DVD+R blank. It's perfect! Everybody says so! And it burns perfectly even at 8x !
