DVD Read Speed: 20x
It is a 7200A/S, the only think that looks weird
is the 20x dvd read speed, maybe Liggy or Dee
can tell us more is the drive can read that fast.

I already tried to find the area in the drive's firmware that actually selects at which speed the motor spins. But I have to admit, that I failed finding it yet

It's not that important, at least you tried.

At the rate they're going, they've now joined the rest of them. No more (long term) firmware support, buy a new drive instead.

Plenty of unsold 800/810's left on the shelves where I'm at. Wonder if they'll go on sale.

They are very expensive, that's why the stay unsold*.

*Personal opinion.

Agreed. Unity Electronics has about 87 PX-740A left, but at $59. They need to drop the price cause then I'd definitely buy another BenQ DW1640 rebadge.

Plextor Japan has just completely redone their homepage:
http://www.plextor.jp/

Before it was very much centered on optical drives. Now that's just one part of it.

Can you return a drive, saying you had no idea it was a rebadged Pioneer? Probably depends on a store.

Well if the new drive would read burned discs at 20x it would be nice! But most probably it is only for pressed singlelayer data discs. Burned discs 8x CAV reading at maximum :-(

Very likely that 20x reading was only a typo on the Tigerdirect page. The Plextor page says 16x for SL and 12x for DL reading (ROM and -R), which seems more realistic

I often come round remembering the good old days where drives were faster in reading than in writing!

In my opinion that was much better, because I read a disc often and burn it only once so i save more time when it is fast reading than fast writing!

I have had a PX-820SA drive for about a month now.

Anyone know where or if there is a firmware update for it yet?

Thanks!

Not that i know of.

There has been no update to the respective Optiarc drives since April and the Plextors were release in July. So Plextor Firmware 1.00 should correspond to Opticarcs latest (1.06).

At what speed did you write? Did you try slower speeds?

Verbatim DL media are best and usually give best results in any brand of drive. Try finding Verbatim 2.4x or 8x media.

In this case during initialising of disk this speed can be chosen only.
