The 830UF has become available since October 2008:
http://www.plextor.be/press/releases...hoice=PX-830UF

I don't have proof, but since the 216 was most recent drive produced by Pioneer in October (and for some months before) it seems the logical guess.

Maybe its worth it cause Liteon doesn't have anything like Plextools. I doubt they will allow IHAS to be crossflashed to Plextor.

Gives quite a bunch of functions for burning quality analysis and drive settings.

Much [all?] of what is offered in PlexUtilities [the tool included with/supported by the LiteOn-based Plextor drives] has been supported by LiteOn drives for a few models now in various software. The TE/FE, Jitter, and Beta scanning can be found in DVDScan, and PIE/PIF scanning can be found in KProbe, DVDScan, and DiscSpeed/CD-DVD Speed. TA jitter is also supported by DVDScan and DiscSpeed/CD-DVD Speed.

I'd assume PlexUtilities will also allow you to mess with OverSpeed/HyperTuning/Online HyperTuning/SmartBurn, much like various tools will allow on the LiteOn side.

With that said, the PlexUtilities program is a little bit better polished, though. It might be worth the $20 to get all those functions in one program. There might even be more to it, but I am just running off of what I have seen around the forum.

If Plextors firmware support is as good as it is for their last OEM drives (zero Updates ) I would ask me, why someone should do this. And what will you gain with Plex Utilities compared to CD-DVD Speed and DVD scan.

But then CD-DVD Speed has it's own problems. I don't know if those are bugs but some things sometimes sure behave strange. Also third parties like CodeKing have started patching the thing so it offers scanning functionality with certain drives. I wouldn't want to rely on such actions for a drive I bought for scanning. I'd want to be sure I have a working solution to begin with. As for DVD-scan it was a nice idea but got stuck in pre-alpha development state. IMHO the user interface is a nightmare. Compare all that against a nice and clean all in one solution like PlexUtilities.

IMHO the big point of PlexUtilities is, that it is an official tool that is endorsed and supported by the drive maker. CD-DVD Speed, DVD-Scan, KProbe, etc. are all unofficial and dependant of some individual enthusiast for support.

PlexUtilities are a much enhanced version of KProbe, which, for the scanning part, does much the same like CD-DVD Speed. PlexUtilities was developed to replace PlexTools, which doesn't support the special features of the LiteOn OEMs that the new drives are.

PlexTools is Plextors own software for drives of their own design (Models 708, 712, 716, 755, 760) that gives access to the special functionality of these drives and other hardware (Video, Harddiscs) Plextor produced. It's essentially a small burning-suite that offers burning, ripping, scanning, DAE, etc. PlexTools also may work with the new OEM drives, however the functionality will be reduced. That's why PlexUtilities was introduced.

No real point you mean jitter scanning, Erik Deppe already announced with the next update he will fully support iHas. Really quality differences between CD-DVD Speed and Plex Utilities I wouldn't expect, the drive at first is responsible for scanning abilities not the software which only interprets what the drive is telling it. I saw up to now no real difference between KProbe and CD-DVD Speed, I wouldn't expect some to Plex Utilities which are also from Karr. The only difference may be that average values are estimated by an other formula, but that is more a matter of taste than quality.

If it is so clean it has still to prove , for sure it's nice to have all under one roof, but when you are honest TE/FE and beta Scans is the only important thing CD-DVD Speed lacks, and not so often in use for every day scanning. Compared to the total lack of firmware support from Plextor since they don't built their own drives any more, it's for me the by far smaller problem.

Thats a more theorethic argument and trust in the name of Plextor by you and no real proof that the official tool works better, and Plextor is not the manufactorer of the drive, only the seller. Thats the reason they hired Karr for the job, Plex Utilities is nothing else than KProbe extended version. And you don't know what connections Erik Deppe has to LiteOn.

PX-708A has no scanning abilities only PX-708A2 which is more a PX-712A with reduced speed. But I know of course Plex utilities (have myselfPlextor drives) but I alway prefered Alex Noe's PxScan for testing.

To sum it up:

All in all it is a matter of taste.

$20?! LOL! Can someone point me to an example where a Plextor is only a $20 premium over the drive it's a rebadge of? Plextors have traditionally been WAY overpriced, and that includes their rebadged models.

Plextor PX-820A/SA drives currently cost 40-97 DKK ($7.35-$17.83) more than their Sony NEC Optiarc equivalents here in Denmark.

The new models are nowhere to be seen yet ... the road to Denmark must be very long and slow.

PlexErase is available with PX- 850A FW 1.02 but PXscan is still not working.
PX-850A can be crossflashed to Liteon iHAP322 but PX-806SA can not be iHAS120(Maybe some difference in EEPROM?)

PxScan/PxView are designed for "true" Plextor drives using Sanyo chipsets, so PxScan will never work with these new drives (unless Alex Noé rewrites the whole thing).

I don't think so, As my opinion, The new PXscan Function in PlexUtilities is only designed for the new Liteon based Plextor because PlexUtilities do not support "true" Plextor drives.....

There is some confusion / mixup about names here. "PXScan" is the name of a separate software written by Alexander Noé ( see: http://www.alexander-noe.com/cdvd/px/index.ger.php ).

The scanning features in PlexUtilities are something different. The tab in screenshot you show us reads "PlexSCAN"

Edit:
Since we now have people who actually own one of these drives I created a thread to collect scanning results for the 850:

Yep - I thought cih99 was talking about Alex Noé's PxScan utility.

Sorry for the confusion.
