Yeah, as far as I know, they will be 24x and will also have the Lightscribe and PlexErase features. Don't quote me though. Well that's for the PX-870, not sure about the other models.

That's good to know, any other specs? maybe for like an external or possibly a blu-ray writer?

If the designations up to now are any indication:

Letters behind the model number:
U = USB (external)
A = IDE (PATA)
SA = SATA

Letters before the model number:
Q = QFlix capability
B = BluRay

"PX" is generic for a Plextor device.

Following this, the 620U sounds like an external slim portable drive. The Q880U like a 5.25" external drive.

Don't all drives have sanyo bits these days?

Ok, looks like the PX-870A will remain 22x but will add Lightscribe. The PX-880SA will be 24x with Lightscribe.

BUT, will they be true Plextor drives, or just rebadged models from other manufacturers???

The PX-B320SA is now listed on Newegg. Looks exactly the same as the PX-B310SA but with lightscribe. Don't really see the point myself. I have the PX-B310SA and only use it for watching Blu-Ray discs.

They will be rebadges. Plextor has stopped designing their own drives and so far there is no indication they'll be starting to do so again.

Plextor LLC today announced the PX-880SA internal SATA and PX-880U external drives. With writing speeds up to 24X and a newly-designed chassis, the drives are the fastest-writing in the Plextor lineup and also include a new noise-reduction design.

Both drives feature technologies to reduce noise and improve reliability. At the 24X speed, air flow can cause bothersome acoustic noise. A new pattern is now included on the drive chassis of both drives to regulate this air flow, reducing the amount of noise created.

Additionally, a "smile hole" passage has been added to reduce the lift force that could cause the disc to warp. This ensures the disc reading and writing quality at the 24X speed.

The drives are bundled with Roxio Creator 10 CE burning software and support LightScribe labeling and Plextor?s PlexERASE and PlexUTILITIES, .

PlexUTILITIES is an advanced application and diagnostic tool that allows users to view basic and advanced drive information, as well as measure and control the burn quality of every disc.

PlexUTILITIES includes PlexERASE, also Plextor?s patented technology, which provides users with a way to permanently remove all disc content.

Both the PX-880SA and PX-880U record single layer DVD±R at 24X, double layer at 12X, and 12X on DVD-RAM media. The PX-880SA internal retails for $54.99 while the PX-880U has an MSRP of $99.99. A 22X PATA version, the PX-870A, is also now available and retails for $54.99 as well.

Looking at the exterior of the drive (especially the top):
http://www.plextoramericas.com/index...dvd-rw/px880sa

it looks more likely the 880SA is based on a drive-design by LiteOn as seen here:
http://us.liteonit.com/us/index.php?...=271&Itemid=67

So it would be MediaTek based.

However there is a notable difference: The 880 is specified to do 12x DL while the LiteOn still is limited to 8x.

The Optiarc 24x series also has a similar top form compared to the 880 as shown here, and is capable of 12x DL burn.

What would differentiate between a LiteOn and Optiarc is the back since the Optiarc doesn't have a 6-pin header on the left compared to the LiteOn.

According to LiteOn's Taiwan site, DL write is capable of 12x.

Since I was swapping the drives around, I checked the back of both 7240S and iHAS324. The LO (that I have) does NOT have the 6-pin header as pictured, thus, it invalidates my postulate about how to check what the Plextor is based off.

What intrigues me is that the 870 has a totally different look when it comes to the top (see the link nekrosoft13 gave above).

I have a Sony DRU-865S, which is an iHAS422, but the top is just like the 870, unlike the actual "dented" LO housing. So there seem to be two design and/or manufacturing processes. Not sure why Sony and Plextor rebadges ended up with the older type housings, perhaps just to keep the costs down while charging a premium for their names.

Here are some real pictures of the 870. Plextor has never made a real effort to update the pictures on their site and/or boxes.

Plextor Europe now has a product page up for the PX-880SA:
http://www.plextor.be/products/DVD_CD/px-880sa.html
Press release:
http://www.plextor.be/products/docs/...X-880SA_EN.pdf

Until now Plextor Europe has sold drives PX-860(S)A based on Pioneer design, which did not work together with PlexUtilities. So YAY for us europeans, we now get drives to use with PlexUtilities without having to import them from overseas
