Plextor's SCSI CD-recorders have, by many people, always been regarded as some of the best CD-recorders ever manufactured. Unfortunately for many people Plextor had decided to stop production of their SCSI models and the latest Plextor SCSI drive that was released was the popular PlexWriter 12/10/32S drive. As you can perhaps imagine it was quite a shock when last year in October, Plextor announced that they would release a new SCSI CD-recorder again.

In this review of the Plextor PX-W4012S we’ll see how well the drive performs. Is the SCSI interface really more stable and reliable than the IDE interface as some people always claim? Does this latest Plextor live up to the standards that we're used from Plextor? Read on to find out!
In our review of the drive we've uncovered some interesting things like Mount Rainier support and full overburning support. We've also used a firmware version that has not been officially released yet! What are you waiting for? Check out our review here!

Your MPO discs...are these the same as the ones I have? The 24 carats gold discs? They can be written at 52x with the current firmware in LiteOns, with a better scan than what the Plextor achieves.

I hope they are not on the list of recommended media

Ah I see, you missed:

Write Speed: 4X (20m:22s - VariRec)

So they were recorded with VariRec (4x). These CD-R's had no gold layer. They're completely blank (no label even).

Ah good...that means that these are not the ones I'm speaking about

Now waiting for Plextor to release a new firmware with P-CAV writing

How probable is this?
People were saying they would it also for the P4012A, but it never came..

..or it could be that you are just being ironic, and i've just fallen for it

That's probably it Personally I don't care about 40X Z-CLV or (P-)CAV writing since it will only be a few seconds apart. The only thing I would have liked to see was US-RW support for this SCSI drive. I guess we can't have it all..

dont think that is going to happen

from what i read in plextor's .pdf files they are pretty negative about the P-CAV writing strategy.
plextor believes that Z-CLV writing is for quality and CAV for a balance between speed and quality. P-CAV fits in neither of the two

Yes, I know that Plextor is hesitant with CAV, but with their 48x writer, they have proven that they can do CAV.

If you look over to LiteOn, then you see that it took them many months from the first P-CAV firmware to the first good P-CAV firmware...(the first one only worked with one brand of media; guess which one), but since Plextor has now already made some experiences on that field, it should be possible to implement P-CAV.

P-CAV is nothing else than writing in CAV mode first and then switching to CLV
