| all problems VS no problems -- shakeout the details I cannot make sense of the various collections of "plextor sucks" and "plextor is the best" rants. Why do some people experience ZERO problems with any media for any application use while others experience seemingly endless problems? Could it be that some people are running their plextor drive on sh**ty hardware or low end problematic junk like VIA, AMD, mystery brand/garage sale components, or super spiffy Fry's "specials", while others are use nothing but top of the line components (ASUS, Abit, Gigabyte etc other components too)? I for one would be interested in a little more detail from the people who bitch about plextor and it's various allegedly consistent failings. Perhaps they've used gimmicky software that hacks core bits of their OS? (bootXP etc) Maybe they have conflicting burn applications (plagued by Roxio woes)? Maybe their system is underpowered (celeron, or pre PIII)? Are they foolishly overclocking their PC (CPU or ram)? It seems extremely unlikely that the manufacturer of drives to which all others are compared would actually produce shady quality intermittently.

| Since when are AMD products 'problematic junk' ? Please also note that ASUS and Abit (from your good list) also make products featuring chipsets from VIA (which is on your bad list.) I'm not saying that you're completely wrong in suggesting that crappy hardware and out-of-spec hacks on machines can cause problems with Plextor products. I just think that you need to adjust your opinions on which products are good and which are not so good. |

| To answer your question, I had problems with a PX-708A where it would read my CD-Rs very slowly and create scuff marks on them. My system is an Athlon XP 1700 with 1 GB RAM (not overclocked) on an Asus A7N8X Deluxe motherboard running Windows 2000 SP4. My CPU runs at 33C and is cooled by an Alpha PAL8045 cpu cooler with a Vantec Stealth Fan on top. I have an old Asus V7700Ti 64MB GeForce2Ti video card in it. This is not made out of 'cheap' components. I still had a problem with the Plextor drive, but the new one did not have a problem. I suspect that there is some sort of manufacturing or design problem somewhere. |

Just for your info Greenboat I have a Shuttle Motherboard which has a VIA chipset. I built 3 pcs with this same motherboard. I have not had any problems with my Plextor 708A. If you read different forum sites the so called top of the line components you mentioned all have had there share of problems using Plextor 708A. First thing I was told about computers is that not every computer component will be compatible. I think your comments are premature in saying one component brand is better than let's just say the low end brands. I have learned that there are so many variables in authoring and burning dvd's. Thanks to forums like this everyone can help each other out with their questions about dvds, computer tech support and so forth, etc. Thanks CDFREAKS.com! | |
