Ritek +R 8x (Ritek R03 02) PX-755a, FW 1.02 AS: On (did create strategy) Burn speed 8x P-CAV, no slowdown From a batch of the worst media i ever bought. Here's what the 712 manages to do (the 716 does even worse) for comparison; http://club.cdfreaks.com/showpost.ph...postcount=1527 TA Test says not good to bad. The 755 stopps the Read Test @.7GB position with the same error as it does @ the layer break when scanning a DL disk for Beta/Jitter. In the 716 the Read Test runs the whole disk but shows some problems. Burst, Sum1, Beta/Jitter, Read (755 and716) scans:

Imation 700MB 32x (CMC Magnetics Co. Type 6) PX-755a, FW 1.02 Burn speed 48x CAV, slowed to 40x @77min mark 48x seems to have been a bit too much for this 32x media. Powerec kicked in when problems arose. Speedread did not work. Instead of 20-48x only 18-42x was read (but only 17-40x exists by default?) C1/C2, Beta/Jitter, Read (755) scans:

I think it's interesting to note that with the 755A and 760A, the recommended speeds for using Mori media are 4x 6x and 8x (with most drives 8x is not recommended).

I got the 755 SATA version on saturday. While I've not got a range of newer media to burn and test I've got over 10 burst tests on Panasonic TYG02 discs (burnt with 755) and i'm getting similar PI's to you on TY media but my PO's are virtually 0 with only none or upto 2 spikes on each scan. TYG02's burnt on my older NEC 3500 have triple the amount of PI's as the 755 burns. No issues with the SATA yet despite having nvidia's drivers installed for my mobo. Thanks for the review tho, really makes me want to buy Verbatim Dual layer media now!

Verbatim -RDL 4x (MKM 01RD30) PX-755a, FW 1.02 AS: Auto (did not create strategy, AS does not support DL) Burn speed 6x CLV, no slowdown Very nice burn concerning PIE/PIF/POE. The 716 with FW 1.09 produces a nicer Beta, also Jitter looks a bit wild on layer 1. However TA Test says very good, very good and good on both layers. Burst, Sum1, Beta/Jitter, Read (712) scans:

From my experience Plextor has always had a very extensive media support in their writers. The 716 is a good example IMHO. There is almost nothing that this writer can't burn, albeit you might have to lower the writing speed in some cases. As for the rest that still doesn't work it's my experience that such media are best left alone. There is amost always a good reason why they don't work... |

Ritek is too inconsistant from disc to disc to really make a fair test. Personally, I love my Plextor 755-SA. I've not had a Plextor drive since 2000 and this to me seems as good as that one in terms of quality. I'm so glad I made this purchase.

Sony +R 16x (Sony D21 00) PX-755a, FW 1.02 AS: On (Forced) Burn speed 16x CAV, no slowdown In the earlier test of this media (http://club.cdfreaks.com/showpost.ph...12&postcount=7) AS was set to AUTO and did not create a writing strategy. I tried another burn with AS set to "On" and it still failed to create a strategy (same result as in above link). So i went and used 'create strategy (quick)' to create a strategy. A 6x strategy was created. Not what i wanted. I deleted that strategy and used AS with the setting "On (Forced)" to burn this disc. It did create a 16x strategy. It looks like AS has a bit of a 'detection'-problem with these media. Very good burn IMHO. TA-Test says good, very good, very good. Contrary to the linked burn above, the 716 could read this only with minor problems. The 755 produced a smooth read curve. Burst, Sum1, Beta/Jitter, Read (755 and 716) scans:

Taiyo Yuden +R 8x (Yuden000 T02 00) as sold by Plextor PX-755a, FW 1.02 AS: OFF Burn speed 12x P-CAV, slowdown to 8x approximately between 3.3 and 3.6GB, speeded up again to 12x afterwards. Very good burn IMHO. Jitter jumps around a bit but TA Test says good, very good, very good. The 712 and 755 read this fine, the 716 has some problems and slows to 2x. Burst, Sum1, Beta/Jitter, Read (712, 755 and 716) scans:

Hewlet Packard +R 8x (MCC 003 00) PX-755a, FW 1.02 AS: Auto Burn speed 8x P-CAV, no slowdown, no 12x overspeed offered (but should be there according to supported media list?) Very good burn IMHO. Beta has a big jump @ 0.8Gb position but it does not seem to hurt the result. TA Test says good, not good, good (mainly due to big peak shift). Both the 755 and the 716 read this fine. Burst, Sum1, Beta/Jitter, Read (755 and 716) scans:

Taiyo Yuden -R 4x (Yuden TYG01) as sold by Panasonic PX-755a, FW 1.02 AS: OFF Burn speed 4x CLV, no slowdown (8x overspeed is not offered) To compare with an AS burn here: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showpost.ph...7&postcount=23 Better Beta and Jitter than with AS. TA-Test says 'very good' across the whole disc. Burst, Sum1, Beta/Jitter, Read (755 and 716) scans:

Sony 650MB 4x CDRW (Mitsubishi Chemical Type 2) PX-755a, FW 1.02 Burn speed 4x CLV, no slowdown, full erase done first Gigarec: 1.1 I don't use 4x CDRW anymore these days. Found this media when cleaning up a drawer. Still the 755 can burn these fine. C1/C2/CU, Beta/Jitter, Read (755) scans:
