Please Help: NEC ND-2500A DVD-R burning problems

Firstly guys I would like to say that this is a great site!
I recently flashed the firmware on my nd2500a to enable it to burn DL DVD. I believe the flashing was successful. The problem is it does not burn single layer DVD-r disks. I have a 10 pack spindle of maxell dvd-r 4.7gb 16x disks and my burner will not burn on any of them. I get the illegal disc cannot write disc at once error or i get the blue screen of death with the message stop 0x0000008e (0xc0000005, 0x8070194f, 0xf1c84AD8 0X00000000)
The drive works fine with DVD+Rs it is able to burn them at 8x now thanks to you guys! I haven't tried a dual layer disk yet as I would like to sort this problem out first.

Seems like a DEAD drive.

I flashed the drive again using Mad Dog 8XDVDRW-PM 2.F8, I figured what have I got to lose?... And it seems to have fixed the problem! The drive now burns on at 8x SOME DVD-R discs but it still does not like the Maxell DVD-R discs. these discs have the maufacturer id RITEK1 and are marked as 16x.

Does this mean that they can only be burnt at 16x? (my drive only burns at 8x max)
or
Are they simply incompatable with my aging NEC ND2500A?
and finally
what brand media (DVD-R and DVD+R) do you think is bext for this drive?

This is low grade media and is only "certified" for max 16x.

I would use Ricoh or Verbatim or TY media.
