When u extract it - the program Winrar will automatically sense the second part.

The fact that your drive doesn't work indicates possible hardware failure. I had 3 failed drives which could not be recovered [would not even read] - those were due to laser diode failure.

If you had extracted it without error and you got a 512KB file, then you're fine and you're flashing the exact file i extracted.

For those who don't have a floppy drive - use this link for finding solution: http://www.shipa-2000.narod.ru/242B/dosboot.pdf

I had my QSI returned several times cos it stopped reading dvd's - it's most probably a dead dvd laser - I returned 4 times in 1 yr!

I found this page while searching for a solution for the same problem as cheezy -- a dud UX30 update to a QSI 242 drive. I've tried flashing to UX27, but it says that the hardware isn't compatible.

So, did lui_gough's firmware fix the problem? I tried downloading the RARs he posted, but the links don't appear to be active any more. Any ideas..? Anyone..?

Well - i don't have the originals - seems it might be a forum bug after cdf moved server. I'm not sure that it will fix your problems - since your drive comes from a different OEM. If it's entirely dead - by all means you can try it once it comes back online. I've tried my best to help - but i found the drive unreliable and unusuable - after so many RMA's i've just given up.

Hm... My drive is a QSI SBW-242B (in an MSI laptop) and the flash to UX30 made it unable to read discs, although it goes through the motions of spinning up and moving the lens around. Ah well, should be easy enough to salvage a replacement from somewhere, I guess.

Unable to read all discs? or just DVD's? [i find that the DVD laser is very weak and is a point of failure] If you are willing to try - by all means - if it's useless already - it can't get any worse .... good luck anyway!

Won't read DVDs or CDs -- the drive spins up a disc, etc, but insists that there's nothing in the drive. I dropped in a Toshiba drive, but it refused to work and appeared to be set to the primary master (needs to be slave). Is there some laptop optical drive jumper setting I'm unaware of that controls master/slave settings..?

Most optical drives DO NOT have a jumper setting. They need to either be flashed with a firmware that TELLS the drive to be MASTER/SLAVE or there might be a tool that you can use with the drive to set it to MASTER/SLAVE but that depends on the drive actually being detected in a computer.

Update:

Now that the UX51 links in this thread are back up, I tried that firmware on my dead drive but it just caused the drive to make worrying noises when reading a disc...

I then found this site and started to try those ROMs. Here's what happened:

US85: More funny noises, drive still not working
UX51: Update set the CD drive as the primary master (according to the BIOS) and so prevented laptop from booting.

That's as far as I got...
