I have an ACER Aspire 5612WLMi laptop, purchased in Jan 07. Recently I’ve noticed a very strange phenomenon. When I extend the lid beyond 90 degrees, the screen turns yellow, and when I extend it further, the screen flickers. As soon as I bring it back to about 90 degrees or less, things revert to normal. I was wondering: 1. has anybody else ever had this happen on their computer? 2. What is the significance of this?, and 3. Is it a sign of impending doom for my laptop? Other than this, it is functioning normally.

Usually that's a broken LCD connector. Have it repaired (under warranty if possible).

It's out of warranty now. Would it cost much, and does it matter if I don't get it repaired? More importantly, would it take long to get it repaired - that is, is it a difficult repair job? As i wouldn't want to have to go without the laptop for too long if possible. Is there any way I could replace the broken part myself?

Thanks for that. I don't think I can repair it myself. What's the likely outcome if I ignore it? Will the screen continue to be ok, or will it just die and be totally illegible at some point in the future? If not, then the discolouration doesn't really bother me (I can live with it!). If it's going to die, then I'll get it repaired asap.

It's difficult to say what might happen in the future but what you might consider doing is finding a replacement screen on Ebay and keep it handy just in case of failure...An independent shop may be able to provide you with an accurate estimate for repair...

It'll get worse by the day. Make sure you backup all of your files before it's too late. You could also use the external monitor connector connected to an external display from now on, but it kinda defeats the purpose of having a portable machine.

It depens wether the glass plate of the lcd has issues or just the connector or the translation/transformer part.

The connector is just a flat cable. You can check it yourself if you're careful enough. The only thing you require is the correct method to open the laptop, because this is different for each laptop model.

If the translation part of the lcd screen has troubles, don't have it repaired. It's not worth it. Same goes with the glass plate. These things are usually 80% of the laptops net worth.

Do you have some sort of insurance you could claim the malfunctioning laptop on?
