Restart your pc and repeatedly press the F8 key You should also have the option to load: Last Known Good Configuration. Good luck.

| Thanks maineman n whappo for fast reply. My computer goes to blank wallpaper. When i try to sw off, still runs until i sw off at mains. Re start pressing f8. Box appears instructing to - 'select boot device' listing- *floppy drive *harddrive *burner i move curser to hd, press enter. Computers returns to original standard windows screen which says- 'click on user name'. When i do this, 30 seconds delay and i'm back to blank wallpaper. .......n the music goes round n round ....... Any other suggestions on how to restore my original settings or get into the computer. I add that i am the only user i had problems a year ago and a computer guy split my hd to try to isolate faults. | You are not booting into safe mode, you are only selecting the boot device. Power off again, restart the pc and press F8, you should get an option screen. Select the number that says "Safe Mode" and press enter. From there you should be able to see your desktop and be able to uninstall spycather express. You have to look at the screen when your pc is starting up to see the option to press F8. |

| HI WHAPPO, PLEASE READ THE SERIES OF EVENTS AS OUTLINED ABOVE. Re start pressing f8. Box appears instructing to - 'select boot device' listing- *floppy drive *harddrive *burner ABOVE IS ALL THAT APPEARS IN A BLUE BOX WITH REST OF SCREEN A BLACK BACKGROUND. THERE ARE NO OTHER OPTIONS OFFERED !! NO MENTION OR ACCESS TO - SAFE MODE, LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION OR SELECT A PREVIOUS DATE RESET ETC. IF SUCH OPTIONS HAD BEEN AVAILABLE I WOULDN'T BOTHER CDF READERS WITH MY PROBLEM. HOPE SOME ONE CAN OFFER ADVICE BEFORE I PASS INTO THE OBSCURITY OF PAGE 2 OR 3. PARPI |

| Hi Parpi, To boot into safe mode, press the F2 button (not F8) when rebooting your computer. If downloading (I would assume you meant you installed) Spycatcher Express caused your problem, I would remove it and use a different spyware removal tool. A few examples of this would be Lavasoft Ad-Aware, Spybot Search & Sestroy for starters. Hope this helps E |

| Yeah, I should have mentioned that if F8 fails to boot into safe mode, then try F2. Sorry about that... In anycase, best of luck

| Thanks guys for responding, but F2 produces nothing. A) Switch on computer and continue pressing F2. Welcome to Windows. Windows Xp. To begin, click user name. I click user name ( continueing pressing F2 ) After 30 seconds screen opens to my standard wallpaper, blank, with no icons or options and remains that way. B) If I s/w off computer reboot clicking F8- Box appears instructing to - 'select boot device' listing- *floppy drive *harddrive *burner If I select hard drive, press enter, clicking F2 - same result as A) Its a weird problem, especially for a computer dummy. Any other advice before I slip to the back pages. Parpi |

| That's a bit odd...by default, the F2 button will usually give you the option to boot to safe mode. Are you pressing it as soon as you turn your computer on? If you are pressing F2 and you see the XP splash screen, it won't boot to safe mode. What kind of computer is it? I'm sure there's a cheat sheet somewhere online |

| O.K. You if you have the manual that came with your computer it should tell you how to boot into safe mode. If you don't have a manual, tell us the make and model # of you pc, maybe we can find the manual online. When booting up the computer there is usually a menu of options and appropriate F(keys) that is displayed across the bottom of the screen. Have you seen something like this when booting the computer? There must a function key that allows you to boot into safe mode, we just have to find out what it is. If whatever you downloaded and installed has hijacked the pc in some way, you might have to start from scratch with a new install of xp or at least, if you have the XP disk, run the Recovery Console and run the repair installation. I hope you don't have to do this, but I don't know what else to suggest. |

| Many thanks to Maineman, Whappo and Eparico for your interest and suggestions. It was suggested I find tech paperwork of my computer but could find nothing significant. Along came Jethro who suggested if computer was OEM it might use F10. I tried F10 - no luck. Worked down F9, F7, etc rebooting each time. F1 gave me accesss ! I chose a previous date and have my personal settings / computer back. My problem arose because I downloaded software to remove malware. Over the years, I have paid so called experts to fix gliches - costly / unsatisfactory. Hence my DIY with a little help from my friends at CDF. Ancient granpa still seeking enlightenment - please note new threads * Software problems * How to surf anonymously * How to transfer music to another computer. Thanks guys. Parpi |
