Hi

used to use Nero, but now I'm burning data Cd's with IMGBURN.

some CDs i burn have loads of files trees within trees.

my concern is will IMG BURN shorten the files names or anything crazy when burning data using drag and drop into IMGBURN ?

why i uninstalled Nero was:
the extra menus every time i right clicked the mouse
extra options when i insert a CD that never went even after the uninstall
a really annoying interface, I've always used Nero, but i got a newer version with a new pc.

it has like.......... an RSS feed box with Nero news, but doesn't tell you the speed it burning??...... or let you save the project or create a CD insert unless you start Nero burning ROM.

i just had enough

I may use another burning program

but for now I'm using IMGBURN

I just started to worry it may be doing something different to NERO (like shorten file names) and wanted to check?

is it ok to back up data with imgburn?

R

ImgBurn has replaced Nero for me. I haven't run into any problems using it.

If ImgBurn touches the file names, it will let you know in the log. It tells you anything it has to do to burn your project whenever that process includes modifying the project contents automatically.

hey i did notice an odd thing today

if i select one file in one folder

and drag the folder into imgburn

it just writes the file, not the file inside a folder

ie if a document called music.avi was in a folder called music , it wouldn't burn the containing folder. only if that's all i am putting on the disk

? Can i turn this on or off?

If you drag and drop only one folder in ImgBurn, it will, by default, will ask you if you want the folder to appear in the root of the disc, or not, when burning. Saying "yes" will have the folder appear, and the files will be inside the folder. Selecting "no" will just have the files appear without being inside a folder; they will be on the root of the disc.

Apart from the special situation that Albert just mentioned, you should think of that 'Source' box as the root of the disc/image.

If you drag folders into it then you'll get those folders in the root of your disc/image.
If you drag files into it then you'll get those files in the root of your disc/image.

*The 'Preserve Full Pathnames' option can also make ImgBurn behave in a different way but that isn't a 'default' setting so I won't mention it.

Maybe you've changed some options in the settings and told it not to ask such questions?

If you just add one folder to the source box it'll ask something like this when you go to burn it:

Quote:
---------------------------
ImgBurn
---------------------------
You've only selected 1 folder!

C:\Users\My Name\Desktop\Test\

Does the 'Test' folder represent the root directory for the image content?

(Otherwise, the 'Test' folder will be visible in the root directory of the image.)
---------------------------
Yes No Cancel
---------------------------
That said, if the folder you've added contains a 'known' subdirectory (i.e. i386, video_ts, bdvm etc) it'll assume it's the root because it knows where those folders are supposed to end up.

sweet i got it now

imgburn/tools/settings/build tab

don't prompt root content.
on off to turn prompt on off
yes or no for default answer

cool

Is there any other things imgburn does that i should worry about or is it going to be basically the same as nero.

i worry about shortening file names or any other craziness

In tools->Settings->Build there is the option "Don't Prompt Root Content".
Check that it is UNTICKED + Press OK.

Okie dokie .. all good

If you want to keep long file names, just use UDF, rather than Joliet.
Every modern system supports UDF

The only difference between imgburn & nero is that imgburn works, verifies correctly, is a fraction of the size ... is free .... um .. is that enough?

The only thing that imgburn can't do is rename a file in the build interface. So you'll just have to settle for renaming your files BEFORE you drag and drop them into imgburns build interface

[slightly off-topic]

I use ImgBurn all the time too, but it does not have all the features that Nero Burning ROM has.

E.g. all multi-session support is completely absent in ImgBurn, including mixed-mode and enhanced CDs.

All the features provided by the other tools in the Nero suite are also not there in ImgBurn (e.g. printing covers, authoring video etc.).

That being said, I use ImgBurn much more frequently than any of the Nero tools except CDSpeed and CoverDesigner.

That's not strictly true DrageMester.

ImgBurn can 'Write' multisession BIN/CUE images, it just won't 'Build' them.

So if you have a mixed-mode or Enhanced CD you can 'Read' and then 'Write' them without a problem.

rd555,

If you've ticked the 'Preserve Full Pathnames' checkbox in the build options it won't prompt you when you only add a single folder either.

If in doubt, uninstall ImgBurn and reinstall it so all the settings get wiped out.

Very annoying message:

You've only selected 1 folder!

C:\Users\My Name\Desktop\Test\

Does the 'Test' folder represent the root directory for the image content?

(Otherwise, the 'Test' folder will be visible in the root directory of the image.)

Yes No Cancel.
Can you turn off this option it is very annoying always asking and saying yes ...no (when you drag files with folder you have folder and files and if you drag files without folder you have files simple as that )
Thx in advance!

"Tools > Settings > Build > Options / Don't Prompt Root Content" looks like the right thing for you. Just set it to whichever way; auto YES if you just want the files/folders inside that one folder, or auto NO for the opposite. Just remember that you've set it like that.

You want to have the folder INCLUDED, then the files inside that folder? Then set to automatically answer "No". That way, you'll have it so you double-click on the drive in Windows Explorer, then you are shown the folder Season 1, and then in that one will be your 10 files.

If that's not what you mean, do be sure to show an image of what you're talking about. I could be off my mark entirely.
